I have also been looking at Legion and Imperial Assault. But I'm leaning toward IA because the scale is 28mm and they would work well with the figures I have already for the Star Wars RPG. And then, when I get back to D&D I'll have deserts and swamps and giant fungus forests and--oh crap. This hobby never ends, does it? The beauty is in the innumerable options and ways to do the same themes!

All of the terrain options mentioned work in Star Wars...and actually appeared in the movies. For example the fungus forests were on the planet that Ayla Secura died on during RotS

Very true. I like to make all my terrain highly reusable.

Took a go at a sci-fi crate for scatter terrain. I like the overall model, but I'm not 100 percent on the paint job. I had been drinking. I also made a bottle cap barrel, but I couldn't get it to take paint.

So, it turns out that while the old WotC minis are not that expensive, the ones I really want (like weird alien animals) are not in stock. I find myself in need of at least a few of these, so I made this guy. Started with a dollar store lion and added some alien-esque features with hot glue. Could have gotten some more detail with clay, but I'm just no good with it. I really like how he painted up.

Cool! Thank you. I think the color scheme really helped out with their look.

Man, I am really enjoying the sci-fi crafting. There is so much cool stuff here to make. Today's project is a sci-fi barrel made with the standard bottle cap recipe. Had a hard time getting it to paint the first time, so I coated it with mod podge and it went great. For the small amount of effort, they actually look pretty cool. And there are several styles of caps to give some interesting variations. Also, I may add some greeblies to further trick them out.

That does look cool painted up...
You guys... I need to work on my D&D campaign minis, but now I'm looking at Starwars Legion boxed sets and sci fi terrain!

I know, right? I found that letting myself work a bit more on another genre is giving me lots of fresh ideas when I do start thinking about D&D again.

I just can't stop making stuff! Okay, for this one, I wanted a big desert lizard in the vein of a Dewback. I need to start taking some WIP photos, and for that I'm sorry. I started with a triceratops toy that I inherited for my kid. But the toy was coated in some kind of nasty blue paint that was chipping badly, and she still likes to lick and chew toys so it came into my possession instead. I cut off the horns and such and added the bony plates with tp roll and hot glue.

So, turns out, desert terrain is stupidly easy to make. Like to the point that I don't even know why I'm posting this. You basically glue sand to things. I recently finished my Dune Sea board for Star Wars. Space garbage scatter terrain, too. I should have probably added more greeblies, but I was in a hurry (as always).

You may want to do something with the sand you have on the terrain pieces. Paint and such tends to make it blend in a whole lot better because it doesn't quite fit in with the rest...

I am aware of that. I took these photos before the sand was dry. Wasn't sure when I'd get back to the shop. But thanks for the criticism.

My other terrain board is 20"x30", I think this one is 30"x50". Would have made them the same size, but I wanted extra space for vehicles.

I think my favorite thing about sci-fi terrain is stuff like this. I found an old toy microphone in my friend's yard (which her kids were obviously done with) and it suddenly looked like a comms tower to me. Just had to cut off the top and turn it upside before adding a few bits and bobs. Little bit of paint and grunge later... The only two storm troopers guard the only crate and the only barrel. Sheesh, I need to get some more models into mass production.

It is always cool to be able to take something like an old toy and turn it into a new great looking piece of terrain!
