Hello people! SMG, aka shiftymcgoggles, here. Just, well, saying hello! I am new so, please, don't bite just yet.
For those wishing to know why I'm here, I'm planning a D&D style game session thing this Halloween with a few friends, and well, wanting to know what's the best way to go about it. From there, well...I'm more than happy to be our group's resident DM. Any tips and tricks you'd like to point me to, please post them.

System-wise, I'm used to 40k and how that works, and I've got a copy of Decent that my friends and I have played before and enjoyed. I'm really aiming to take the best parts of both and well, make something a lot simpler, maybe borrowing heavily from yogsquest

The best advice anyone could give I agree, hence why I'm already working on the system...By well, stealing from the other ones.

Welcome. Maybe look into 40k roleplay. It could be an easy transition from 40k to more of an RPG setting. Also you won't have to purchase a ton of new miniatures.

Greetings. As far as advice, make sure everyone at the table is having fun! Also, the rules for any game system are more guidelines than hard fast rules. If you don't like something about one of the game rules, change it. But, be consistent in your decisions as the game master. If you change/modify a rule, make sure you apply it the same way every time!

That's the aim! I'm thinking of a simple scenario of having the players wake up in some crypt, where they must reach the surface and escape before they're sealed in. Throw in a few areas, say having to navigate their way up and out, through the hordes of the living impaired, monstrous slime cubes, and a band of goblin warriors, with maybe a few puzzles thrown in if I find that it's too combat heavy. As for well, the rules, I'm thinking of keeping it simple, with 4 stats they roll d20 against if they're to complete a feat of say, strength or skill. My only issue is combat mechanics, and if I should go for a board and figures or not. I'd rather go for it being on a board, what with Scotty's brilliant tutorials that lead to me sighing up here. Also, Hi Scotty!! Love your channel!

Well, one really big bonus for using minis and a board, your players will be able to use the terrain tactically if they can see the terrain a whole lot better than if you're doing theater of the mind. That doesn't mean you can't do both. Have any area where the use of terrain would be important, say you have a challenge for the players to get across a room because there are traps that they have to avoid. Then you could use a game board to find out how they are navigating across the room. Most importantly, combat. I remember one combat I ran many years ago, that if I had not used a board, my players would have not had been so involved. They were jumping on chairs, tables and beds, the location was a barracks, and I gave them the opportunity to use the terrain!

Exactly why I'd love to have minis and a board for my players to traverse, maybe put down tiles only when they round the corner or uncover a map?

are you going to try to make your own rules system or use existing ones and just modify to your purpose. if the latter take a look at dead simple roleplaying (blister is the science fiction rules V5)

Could you give me a link to what you mean?

Thanks Stan, I've had a look and it'd be perfect for what we need. After a little bit of tweaking. I've got a player who's pretty well versed in thaumcraft, so, a little bit of adjustment to allow a thaumium battle-mage class among other things.

Exactly why I'd love to have minis and a board for my players to traverse, maybe put down tiles only when they round the corner or uncover a map? This is exactly what I do now with the dungeon tiles that I have made. I've even done it old, old school and roll dice whenever a corner is rounded or a door is opened. Read the result off a table that you have created and lay down the appropriate tile.
