Wizards of the Coast recently brought back Heroscape as the Magic the Gathering Arena of the Planeswalkers board game. Its MSRP is $29.99 USD and it comes with 35 miniatures (5 painted, 6 clear orange plastic, 6 clear blue plastic, and 18 unpainted plastic in green, black, and white colors). It also includes a 20 sided black die (slightly larger than typical RPG scaled d20s which is nice) 10 6 sided combat dice, 60 Spell cards that use recycled MTG cardgame art and same cardstock, 15 army cards made from recycled MTG cardgame art and same cardstock, 6 cardboard hex grid battlefields, 2 cardboard ruins, 2 plastic three-hex heroscape terrain pieces and 2 plastic one-hex heroscape terrain pieces. The minis are the same 28mm scale as WOTC D&D Minis and Heroscape figures. They use heroclix sized bases but unlike the old heroclix bases these are molded onto the figure like a D&D mini instead of a base the figure is slotted into like the old heroscape figs. This makes rebasing slightly harder as you will need to cut the mini off the base instead of just cutting the pegs off the underside of the base like you could with the old heroclix minis. They also appear to be made of the same or similar quality plastic as the D&D Minis, Pathfinder Battles minis, Wizkid Heroclix, and the old Heroscape minis. None of the minis share the same sculpt., all are unique miniatures. If you buy it for just the minis it comes out to about $0.86 USD a mini give or take a bit for tax. I found my set at Target for the MSRP price. Here's what you get: Note figures stood in front of a 1 inch by 1 inch grid. MSRP Varies by Store and Brand. This model kit is bought and repacked under many different brands by various stores and distributors. I purchased mine on clearance that had been repacked under a Toys R Us house brand for $3.00 USD. I've seen it sold as high as $20.00 USD online. Its worth about $8.00 USD honestly I wouldn't pay more than that for one. It makes a great D&D "Revived Fossil" or other skeletal dinosaur monster. They also sell a Neanderthal, T-Rex, and Velociraptor kit. The Neandethal stands almost as tall as the Spinosaurus is long and the Velociraptor is around the same size as the Spinosaurus kit. I've not found a T-Rex kit so no idea how big it is. A: Spinosaurus Skeleton B: D&D Miniatures Doomguard, Human female

I got some of the Defenders of the Realm game minis from Eagle-Gryphon Games. Found here - www.eaglegames.net/category-s/128.htm?searching=Y&sort=7&cat=128&show=30&page=2. The dragon mage, dragonkin, glutton, orc warrior and (armored) skeleton are nice figures with good detail and good proportion for use with 25/28 mm scale. The dragon figures are small (about 75mm tall) and come in two poses. The facing forward pose is good, but I did not like the other "looking sideways" pose. It does not stand up on its own and the wings wrap around the body. The set of heros set is a mixed bag. Most are closer to 1:72 (22/23mm)than 25mm. The dwarf is a nice sculpt, except for his axe.

Interesting group of figures - wonder why they made the heroes such mixed sizes? The discrepancy is such that I am not sure the "dwarf" is really a dwarf - maybe it's supposed to be a barbarian!

Defenders of the Realms (DotR) board game pieces 1st WotC 2003 Dwarf barbarian, 2nd DotR skeleton warrior, 3rd DotR dragon mage, 4th orc warrior, 5th Age of Mythology (AoM) viking (1:72), the game pieces came unpainted, I put a black wash on the mage and orc to bring out the detail. 1st WotC dwarf barbarian, 2nd, 3rd, 4th DotR male adventurer figures, 5th AoM viking 1st dwarf barbarian, 2nd, 3rd, 4th DotR female adventurer figures, 5th AoM viking 1st dwarf barbarian, 2nd DotR dragon, 3rd AoM viking, the dragon was green, I repainted about 2/3 rd of it. It did not have a base and would not stand up. I tried to straighten the wings. I held them open with hair pins for a month. them returned to their original position over two days.

indigo777, your comparison post was awesome. Thought it could use a little revival. I recently ordered a "Arena of the Planeswalker" set. Threw in a dwarf comparison. Twilight Creations zombie (Bag O' Zombies), 1:72 scale elf x2, 1:72 scale dwarf, old 25mm lead dwarf, WotC 2003 dwarf barbarian (28mm) add HeroClix LotR Thorin Oakenshield, a blurry pic

I've been on the fence for several years, now, with the idea of purchasing Caesar's 1/72 Dwarfs. I love their Elves, Goblins, and Orcs. I'm painting up at least one set of Elves as Drow. Made a couple of the female Mages into Driders: cut them at the waistline, glued them to cheap, black plastic toy spiders. Easy, fast way to create a couple of Driders! Turned out OK. Actually put them into a 2e BattleSystem Skirmish game. Proved to be fun and interesting, even if they died quickly.
Thanks for the comparisons on the Dwarves. I prefer the proportions, and scaling, from 1e AD&D rule books, myself, so these comparisons really help! Cheers!

I agree, I think it is a barbarian too. I've had to fix the axe head. It was bent and the shaft was was real thin at the blade.

May need to get a few of those blind bags. The minis seem the right size for some good statues and the wolves might work as additions to my pack of direwolves, though I might just break down and buy another set of the fenrisian wolves because I like the ones I got for cheap...

Found the Jadatoys Nano Metalfigs today at Walmart. They are painted Die Cast metal. These sell for $0.97 USD and can be found on displays near the ends of toy aisles. They have Harry Potter, Marvel, and DC branded figures. Edit: WWE Wrestling and Street Fighter lines have been added as well. A: Dementor Nanofig B: D&D Human Doomguard from D&D miniatures line C: Groot Nanofig A: Dementor Nanofig B: D&D Human Doomguard from D&D miniatures line C: Groot Nanofig A: Dementor Nanofig B: D&D Human Doomguard from D&D miniatures line C: Groot Nanofig I purchased Groot figuring he'd work as a stand in for tree monsters or warforged, sadly his sculpt is pretty bland. The Dementor on the otherhand is great. I love how thin it is, like its a floating sheet. It will make a great stand in for a lot of horror monsters shadows, wraiths, and even goofy sheet ghosts. Edit: Looks like Photobucket shut down 3rd party hosting. I'll slowly be swapping size comparison pics over to Imgur.
