tauster and I have been chatting about trading crafting materials. He sent me a bunch of bits and baubles from his own collection and I have been unable to work on anything else because I keep coming up with new ideas of how to use the things he sent. He feels very strongly that we (the crafting community at large) should be sending and trading crafting materials with each other far more often than we do (you can see his post here). I couldn't agree more. We all come from different places around the globe, we have different backgrounds and skill sets. And we have access to different crafting materials that others may not. Why shouldn't we share these boons with each other? I offered to send some craft materials to tauster, but he said that I should "pay it forward" by sending crafting materials to someone else. Then that person might feel inspired to send some craft materials to some one else and so on. I like that idea. I like that idea so much that not only will I be sending some things to tauster, but I have also decided to send crafting material to 3 other members here to kick start some insider trading. I'm going to send out some random bits that could be perfect for a modern, supers, or sci-fi game, but it also has great potential for fantasy too. I likely wont include any basic materials (cardboard, craft sticks, etc). However, because I am a woodworker, I may include some square dowels. So, if you would like to receive some free crafting materials, simply leave a post saying so. I'll give it a week or so, and then I will pick 3 random people. Maybe I'll assign names to numbers and then roll some dice. I have stolen so many techniques and ideas from all of you that I feel it is time to give back... happy crafting. This plan to send crafting parcels to members on this forum has no end date. We will keep it alive as long as people are interested in participating. So, if you aren't on the list.... get on the list! Don't miss out!

now that's an idea! While I'm also interested, you've helped me out before, so please consider me last. And I would like to put forth I will send three people some of my random stuff. Same as Curufin mostly modern stuff, but I do have gravestones and skeletons that are universal. Awesome idea!

Wow, this idea seems to get traction! *happy dance* Of course I'll contribute as well. For everything received, I'll send out three packages. I just crunched some numbers. Before you roll your eyes - I know, number crunching is never going to be as much fun as crafting - bear with me. It's only a few lines and some numbers. Won't hurt a bit. As per today, this community has 1.093 users. 663 of us sadly never made a single posts, leaving us with 430 active posters and 31.025 postings in total. 224 users have posted 10 times or less and 206 users contributed more than 10 times. The latter group made 30.233 postings, which means that a group of 19% is responsible for 97% of all postings. Now imagine what this community will become if we can get just the other 224 users who contributed up to 10 times to chime in more often. And I can't even begin to imagine what happens if we get the 'silent 60%' motivated!

To help control costs...look up the if it fits it ships boxes, the smaller ones are fairly cheap.

how about we do this secrete santa style? draw random names, and send them our stuff? Just a few thoughts: 1) If ( and only if, mind you) we want this scheme to go truly exponential in a mathematical way, we might want to avoid sending multiple packages to the same user. So we'd kind of need to report who got already something send. I don't want to keep people from receiving more than one package, but if the receiver wants to keep true to the 'get one, send three' principle, shipping costs might quickly spiral out of control. Example: Sending one parcel from Germany to the US is about 16.5 Euro*. So, should I be so lucky and get packages from five users, I'd have to shell out almost 250 Euro in shipping alone. That is quite a sum, even for a good cause. *...yes I know: intra-EU shipping costs are way less, but shipping to Brazil, Australia or New Zealand is probably even more expensive. That doesn't mean that whoever got a package is to be deleted from the list of candidates, but we should make sure somehow that first all participants get at least one package before we start a 2nd round. 2) Also, it might help to know where everybody is from. I know there's a field 'location' in the user profile. I just filled mine out, but I seem to be unable to see it from other users. Having that information in the user list might help a lot. I'm not saying that we should only send packages to people nearby ('nearby' from a shipping costs point of view) because that would defeat the purpose of having our global crafting community growing more tightly together. But some people might be short for money and would hesitate to join the fray. So having a way to join the parcel-fun without having to break the bank will help bringing more participants in. ...just my two cent. Feel free to correct me, disagree or generally chime in!

Like the movie of the same name. thats one thing for sure. unfortunately its something to be here with you guys. but its something else to give you my adress and other vital info. though i dont give a damn about it and probably done it in my profile. i know that others might not be interested. i have unfortunately nothing really good to offer. most of what i use is what everybody can easily get around their houses. so count me out. not to mention sending such things cost money something im not able to do right now.
but i agree w ith you guys, this place could really benefit from a trading post. so i wish you luck on all of this. its really a good idea.

I think that's right on point. I was thinking pull one name at random, send them stuff, and receive something from another member till everyone got something. Then we could go another round (If we are comfortable with the expense).

Thats right: We have to figure out a way of exchanging adresses without making them visible to the public. I guess private messages would do.

Obviously it is up to each crafter to decide if they feel comfortable giving out their address to another member. In any case, it should only be in a private message.
I would also say that I don't think that any members should be excluded from an exchange because they can't reciprocate. If fact, I might feel more obliged to send some stuff to a member that is down on their luck (recent break-up/divorce, death in the family, lost job, transfer or just struggling to make ends meet etc). I little gift could go a long way.
We also (collectively) have a huge skill set that might be able to be offered as well. We have members that are machinists, metal workers, woodworkers, sculptors, writers, painters, mold makers/casters, calligraphers, computer experts and a whole host of other things. Maybe there are some talents that could be traded as well. For instance, I am a woodworker and I make my own square dowels and different sized craft sticks, plus I have a nearly inexhaustible source of sawdust for flocking... but I cant sculpt or draw anything to save my life.
It might not be a bad idea to list certain things you may be looking for too. I cant find the packs of little plastic arrows (that Scotty used for arrow counters and the spike points of the orc baners), but maybe someone has more than they need. Maybe someone cant find wooden coffee stirrers where they live but others cant throw a stone without hitting a place that has them.
I am clearly just rambling now...

I don't know if I have much to offer other than skills. Maybe I don't realize I have access to stuff others don't. I get almost everything I use from DollarTree and Walmart.
