OK, So I am starting a Deep Space 9 Campaign. Ship combat is not going to be a major part of the setting (but eventually will play a part). I am asking the great crafting hive mind for some ideas on how to make some some Trek Universe minis for ship combat. I know simple answer would be to go buy some of the HeroClix type deals. Fedration ships would be fairly easy. They basically have a saucer section and pylons with the engines. Wooden discs/medicine bottle lids are a good base for the saucers and popsicle stick/wooden matches good for the engines. That leaves something like sculptie for the body..... Harder part would be making Klingon, Romulan and Cardiasian ships. Anyone have any ideas? I can always find pictures of the ships online, save them, scale them, print them, and glue them to a soda bottle lid.... but I want something with a little more homemade taste and a little more pop to them.

Not the same thing but have found some of the papercraft models. Will post some pics when I start making them. Hopefully the nerve in my arm will behave itself so I can make some.

An ideal style for the combat would be to have the stats for the ships (damage, shield HP, structural HP, maneuverability, et al) and be able to plug in bonuses from the PCs/NPCs stats. TV type example would to be having Geordi pump some extra energy into the shields or engines for an evasive maneuver. Or Worf rerouting power to a phaser burst. I know a place or two that sell the minis (I have the X-Wing game) however my wallet does not want to shell out $100 (minimum) I did however find a funky page of Star Trek Lego Minis. Now to figure out what pieces are which and go to something like Brick Link. Having something simple and somewhat quick like the X-Wing game for space battles. I haven't read through the Last unicorn Games section on the star ship combat yet. the bonus with using that system is that there are a ton of resources (fire power, shields, speed, crew compliment) for the cannon Trek ships. For the most part I want to try to have the Savage World motto for the ship combat "Fast, Furious, Fun", trying to keep the cinematic aspect from the TV show. I need to look over the Cadet Handbook (some sort of Star Fleet Battles quick set up, unsure what version), The star ship combat from the DS9 (LUG core book), and one or two others I downloaded as well as watch those videos. GF has been sick this week, we are invited to a NYE party but might ditch because of her being sick. I should try to look around for the DS9 DVDs and rewatch them all..... As with most RPG settling based on tv or movies it is a reboot universe.... I have an outline for the first adventure done. Starts off similar to the series but I changed it. Federation comes in to help manage the station, which the Cardies trashed the place as they left. Discover the worm hole. Two Klingon ships (with an aging captain) are there for the dedication of the station. Three or four Cardie ships come in with ground troops (Klingon captain reluctantly tells the ships to cloak while he comes over to the station to help defend it in hand to hand combat). Federation help is a few days away. Tweaking the energy output from their ships a few Marquis ships surprise and destroy one of the Crady ships, Klingons uncloak and attack. The Marquis sort of give the bird to the Federation by saving the bacon of the folks on DS9, they gain some support on Bajor (both groups hate the Cardies), and the Klingon Captain gets to die in battle instead of dying in his bed.

there is a book created by some companies for D&D that i thought was kinda good for such ships mechanics, though their mechanics works for boats on the sea. but basically, all ships takes 10 rounds to turn a certain number of clicks, a click is 11.25 degrees, there is 32 clicks to make a whole 360. so if their ship had say... 40 clicks... it would be able to turn a complete circle and more in a single minute. mind you it would be considered very very fast.
in their system, the smaller the ship the faster it can turn, the bigger the sluggier. but it would also make the bigger way faster in a straight line. in everycase what im saying is that there are numerous systems for flying combats. just have to pick the one you think works best for you.

I've been thinking of trying to blend the Last Unicorn Games combat with the minis aspect of ST:Tactics/X-wing mini game.
G/f has been sick for the past week. Too many cops and drunks out on the road tonight so a perfect excuse to end up reading up on a few star ship combat techniques.
Too bad it would totally blow away the Trek combat aspect, but I so love the "real" Newtonian Physics of the space battle in Babylon 5, also got to see a little bit of it in the new BSG. Fire your thrusters (fire your guns) as you approach a target. Use your lateral thrusters to pivot while still having a bead on the target. And continue firing as your initial thrust makes you pass the target. A lot of sci fi tends to treat combat as either like an atmospheric aerial dog fight or a a naval battle (you sunk my battleship).

Back in 2003 I met a guy at Origins Game Fair who had made a 3D Star Trek game called Full Impulse (based on the old Full Thrust game). It uses some of those "space physics" too. All of the ship are MicroMachines which are still available on Ebay for not much. I loved the game so much that I immediately set off to replicate it. I got all of the ship files and rule from the guy there and we became fast friends. It contains ship stats for nearly every ST ship ever. And each ship as stats for weapons, shields, speed, transporters, damage control teams, fire control, etc.... I made a PDF of how I made the ship stands here: dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/87433904/3-D%20Ship%20Stands.pdf

I believe it was Matchbox or Hot Wheels that had a line of Star Trek ships in the mid-90s, if memory serves. Might be able to find a those on Ebay as a lot.
Building in Lego micro scale (out of all the little small stud count pieces and "greebles) might be an option. There are tons of Star Wars examples I've seen. And, pfff, everybody knows Trek is better than SW so somebody must have made some Federation models [Ah, just read your post where you found those already so...]
I saw some Kre-O Trek sets on Amazon. Pricey, maybe, but definitely the right parts.

Happy hunting- Z

Killer stands and eliminated ones of my pet peeves with a lot of movie/tv sci fi. Two random ships traveling through space meet up with each other and they are oriented like two cars on a road (both nose to nose on all 3 axis. They never show a ship 40 degrees off unless it is damaged. Also cool for the elevation aspect. Plus the damaged ships = way cool for coming late to a battle. Since this is a "family" forum I will abbreviate. I want to go the CAMF way... Think Cheap Mother for that abbreviation. If you're over a certain age you can figure it out but if you have a little one looking over your shoulder they will not see foul language. If my daughter was a tad younger I wouldn't want her seeing blatant profanity, so I won;t put it up for others. deckplans.de ends up having more than star trek, they have some star wars and BSG mini builds as well from Lego. I've seen some of the Hot Wheels and micromachines on ebay for prices that made my jaw drop. If I had that type of money to spend I'd buy a vacuum form table and commission someone to sculpt them. I think one I saw was $100. For about $30 I can order the individual bricks for 3-5 ships (ballpark guestimated the mini ships are about $5-$8). Once you have a bunch of the bricks you can make a few different types of ships. I also found a Lego CAD program, not sure of the features, haven't farted around with it yet. But I think the program will tell you how much of what type of brick you need. Brick Link has a bunch of private businesses that sell individual bricks. So far this is seeming like the way to go for me. It seems to be the cheapest way to do things while offering the most versatility. Sort of like using the 2.5D tiles, modular builds. Larger builds would run into some money. Say if I wanted to build DS9 5ft across. Originally I think my idea was going to be along the lines of using bottle caps, straws, and popsicle sticks. One of the things I like about the folks here, ask a question and you get a bunch of really cools ideas and aspects you never thought of before. Thank you all. DMZOOK - you'd be surprised. there are more Star Wars Lego stuff than Star Trek. Engineering reason for that. A lot of the SW stuff is more angular. The Star Trek stuff is more rounded (less conducive to Lego builds), plus the nascells being on pylons they tend to destroy themselves. I have seen some awesome builds for both universes in the past few days.

runningwolf, do you do any casting? I have 10-12 extra ST micromachines (1-2 per faction all different) I could let go. If you did a little casting you could build a fleet pretty fast and you could kit-bash the rest. I'm just talking out loud. Not sure if you want to go the micromachine route.

At the moment money is a bit tight so was thinking the lego route.

What rpg will you be playing? Is it a d20 game?
Because i remember seeing lots of starships stats in a D20 Modern book (D20 Future or D20 Future Tech, maybe both, can't remember). They were all well classified by type and size, and progress level (which is the advance of technology). You even have some sample ships.

I'm running the PC stuff in GURPS and will be using the ICAS (whatever the Last Unicorn Games system is) for the star ship combat. It sort of seems like a cross between star ship stats and the players skills (The ship has x amount of HP, x amount of energy to use, weapons can do X amounts of damage) with the weapons skill of the PC at the weapons stations giving a bonus, the pilot skill offering a bonus to the evasion of the ship.

the cheapest way to get a lot of ST ships cheaply would be to buy the 'star trek fleet captains' board game. that gives you 12 federation and 12 klingon ships. unpainted, but you can get it off the 2nd hand market for as low as $50. so that's about $2 per ship and they are the same models as the heroclicks and attack wing models.
