After the volcano, the kids are wanting to head to a ruined castle next (this is after I talked them down to from "a destroyed Halo place", having to nudge them gently away from the idea of "robots and super soldiers"). So, I need collapsing stone walls. And I have been dying to try the sponge-block-rubble technique that DMScotty showed in one of his older videos. And when I came across some of the toilet brushes at the dollar store... I couldn't pass them up. So, I pulled the foam "ball" out of the wand portion of the brush and cut it all up into individual rectangles. Now, these were nowhere near the right scale to use as is. So, I cut them all up again! Much better. Now, DMScotty coated the outside of his blocks with several coats of PVA to strengthen them. I thought, "hey, they're sponges - I will make a water/glue mixture and have them soak that up"! The idea was, get them good and saturated and then let them dry out. That way, the glue will be all throughout them instead of just on the outside. Sorry everyone, I did not realize that this first picture was this blurry! These have been drying for almost 24 hours now. I checked them last night before heading to bed and... I don't think my plan worked. There was probably too much water in the mixture, as they still felt very spongy (almost like nothing had been done at all). So... I will just go with the proven concept of coating the outsides instead! More to come.

Thanks for posting this - knowing what won't work is useful, too.
