One of my favorite modules is the Gates of Firestorm Peak. I am going to run the second part of the module, The Twisted Caverns. I am going to build the entirety of it. Its a fairly extensive dungeon, so it should keep me busy.

I found this so interesting that I went and had a sneaky peek at the module, and it is really impressive! So much so that, as it so happens, it fits into the existing environment of my campaign perfectly, so, I am going to be running it with 5th edition.. since it converts so easily now. I have always greatly enjoyed the Far Realm in the D&D cosmology, and this module kind of introduces the concept, so it is historically awesome for me, and looking through the story, the background, the game play, the progression and the writing.. oh, and the art! Yeah, I think its one of the best modules ever made.
Also, in my game, purely by chance, there is a nearby city that has lately had a terrible harvest, escalating tensions and the threat of great violence breaking out with a tribal group in the neighboring wilderness, there is also a nearby mountain range and the players are currently in an underground environment with various groups who could very easily be used to tie in direct hooks to the main module story line! What a happy little co-inkydink!
Thanks Valas, this will be the first actual by the book adventure I have ever run. Also, guess I better get to making some dungeon tiles!

Your welcome AJ. Project update. I have completed ... mostly... the section in the cropped picture below. Still needs some painting touch up and some washes still. I still have a lot of tiles and accessories to complete.

Man that looks really good, I also love it on the glass table....sort of makes it look like it's floating or something.

This is going to be a mammoth project! Still, with great dedication comes great crafting. I just had word from Joe of Heroic Maps, he said the Caverns set is due for release Sept/early Oct, and there is an update in the works for some template sheets (floor and wall-top texture sheets) for 2.5D Next and custom 2.5D tile creation. He said the interest and praise from the crafting community has been really great!

I wasn't really interested in that part, though I will have to figure a way to include Wellfast and his red sapphire key for the gate.

I pretty much already have what I need for that, as I have a heap of modular tiles already.. so yeah, I would like to build it all, just for completeness, even if the players go in different directions.

So I got some more work done on the project this weekend. I was able to flesh out another part of the cavern - still have some final items to do on the new section, washing, etc. I laid the tiles out in my living room and realized the scope of this endeavor as I moved furniture to have space to lay it out! Anyways, some new pics. Overview of completed tiles. New portion:

Excellent! So how are you going to handle the dungeon dressings? (stalagmites, pools, fissures, etc)

Excellent! So how are you going to handle the dungeon dressings? (stalagmites, pools, fissures, etc) I will craft them in 3D elements using the various techniques I have learned from this forum. I am also going to have to custom craft a few of the monsters such as the deepspawn. I was not planning on tackling the dungeon dressings until I had the tile sets completed. I also learned I have to mark the tiles as it was a bear to put them together in the right order. I know its hard to tell scale in the pictures, but it was about 8 feet from top to bottom in the picture. I am maybe a third of the way done in crafting the actual tiles. How goes the project on your side?

Your tiles fit together nicely. My caves always seem to have gaping fissures between tiles. Looking great so far!

I have just finished my sewer set modular tiles, so I can start doing some cavern tile experiments using stacked layers of cardboard to give a more topographical aspect. Its breaking some of the 2.5D 'rules' but it still allows play unhampered by walls, per se. So picture built up layers like this To build complex cavern tiles looking something like this (except with a rock texture, fungus, rope bridges, chasms, ponds, rubble, stalagmites, etc)... And its going to be a slight nightmare to cut all that with a craft knife, but the overall effect will be awesome.. clearly though, a lot of work and planning is going to go into this.. I am inspired by what this guy did on his blog, using layered cardboard.. check it out if you like.
