Good job for a first attempt at painting, pretty cool mini, too. If you're starting out this good it can only get better, so I'm expecting life-like quality paint jobs from you in a few months.

Good advice all around. And amazing collection, Adamantine. Bought a little bag of pirate and ninja figures from Wal-Mart today for five bucks. 90 pieces total, think I might repaint and rebase them tonight. Gotta' start somewhere.

Hey. I'm Quinn. I'm a 22 year old man living in the land of Alabama, a simple place of vast forests in the kingdom of USA.
I'm a carpenter by trade, a chef at heart, and a D&D player in my soul. I'm married to a bonnie lass and expecting my first son soon.
It's certainly not easy finding other adventurers' to join on glorious quests in this land, but the few that do are quite loyal.
Odd speech aside, I really appreciate finding a community like this. Hope to learn a lot.

Brilliant as usual. Methinks this'll be the next project of yours I try out.

Did you handmake some of those minis? Good job if so.

It will give it that rushing river look I think you are going for. I think I might try using tin foil as a base for the water to give it an even more intense ripple effect, too. Dunno. Have to try some stuff out.

Just got another little idea for generic filler. These are mini figures from Toysmith. It's on Amazon for about 5 bucks. They look decent and you get 36 pieces. Not bad for generic figures.

My suggestion would be to take your base and get a good idea of how you want it laid out. Maybe take a marker and draw where the streets will be, draw squares/rectangles/etc. where you would want the buildings to go. Do something to give yourself a visual image of what goes where. Then make assorted generic buildings and place them on the base. I'm not a fan of gluing buildings to a base. Just because it means I can't use them somewhere else later. As far as walls are concerned, I'm not a big fan of using the big packing foam for most things, but they work pretty well for a wall. It's big and thick, and a lot of the time the design of the foam already resembles a wall of some sort. Packing foam tends to soak up paint really quickly, though.

Took a look at Reaper and they have some AWESOME stuff. Like that most of what I see is stuff I can paint myself, too. Good prices, but I still have a dream of getting dollar a piece minis. That being said, I'll pay any price for this upcoming Lich... The moment I saw this all the pleasure centers in my brain started firing off.

What sort of flocking are you using for that grass? Also, nice! I do carpentry for a living, so I have a HUGE excess of sawdust. Like, several five gallon buckets full. So I just took a red solo cup, filled it half full of sawdust, poured some green paint on top, mixed it up really good with a stick, and then adjusted the color with a little darker or lighter green until I liked it. It was pretty easy, and the sawdust really soaked up the paint. Then I just brushed on some Elmers glue and sprinkled the flocking on top, pressed it down a bit, and let it dry. It was the easiest part of the whole thing to be honest.

Cool idea. Also a suggestion would be to put some hot glue ripples through the river and around the rocks before the podge then lightly dry brush the hot glue points with gloss or white. Didn't even think of that. You've definitely given me some good ideas for touching this thing up. I'll give it a shot and upload pics later. Dry brushing was what I did for just about the entire structure. Base coat of black, dry brushed on white. Used a tiny bit of Granite Grey on the edges to make it pop.

So I've been going the route of taking cheap dollar store toys and painting them up convincingly and attaching them to a base. Even taking cool generic looking figures and turning them into statues for map embellishments. But you can only have so many plastic spiders and dinosaurs before you want something more. Now, I doubt that I could actually make a convincing mini by carving it myself. I'm good at making maps, terrain, etc. so far, but I wouldn't be able to make something convincing enough to look alive from scratch with my current skill level. So here's my noob question. I own no minis as it stands. I've thought about buying a bulk pack of minis from E-bay or somewhere else like that. Before I go spending the money to do so, however, I wanted to ask the cheapest places you guys have found minis. What's a good route to go about filling in the gaps? Do you have a favorite brand? This question has probably been asked 1000 times by now, and if so, sorry. I'm a budding DM and crafter just looking to start a good, solid collection of minis. I also wouldn't mind paying a bit more for PCs. But I still have very little money to work with. (I just had a kid, so of course my wallet is thin. Which is fine. ) Any advice would be appreciated.

AWESOME job. You did a better job on this than most "professionally" painted minis I've seen. It looks so organic and natural. Keep it up.

Now, taking the theory you've shown us and applying it should allow us to use our imagination and make a good tavern. But for guys like me who really admire your work and want to see what your interpretation would be, I'd like to see a video at some point of a tavern, a pub, an inn, etc. With a bar and alcohol bottles and bedrooms and etc. Somewhere for our adventurers to rest, find gossip, and get hammered on Orc Blood Ale.
The main problem I'm having with my crafting practice right now is making good furniture. Making convincing tables and chairs hasn't been hard for me, but everything else is escaping me for the most part right now. I've only been crafting for a week, so I'm sure practice will make perfect.
So, there's my request. Love what you do man.

Have you thought about using mod podge for the river? It will give it a clear layer over top of it. Thought about it a bit too late. I only started crafting last week, this was my very first project. Made a few more since that I might upload later. But now that you mention it I may go back over it with a layer to give it that nice sheen. The bridge is about two inches wide, about big enough for two minis to cross. Got one guy playing under me running a pretty ballin barbarian who has a habit of failing saving throws like crazy. Gonna get him to try and fight his way across the bridge against 6 or so guys all trying to knock him into the rushing river and rocks. Or I might have a Kraken or something similar pop out of the water and try to swipe him off the bridge with its tentacles when he gets about halfway across. That was the general idea for this build.

Dude, this is a ballin idea. I think my guys would get peeved at me though. They're pretty one minded and would probably all get stuck and die. Heh.

Not a bad idea. Definitely a fast way to fill that empty shelf in the wizards house. Thanks!
