I just recently got into painting about a month ago when I found this site. My first attempt at a paint job was my Black Dragon which I thought turned out pretty well. Other than that I have never painted a miniature so I decided it was time to give it a stab. I still haven't bought any good paints yet but I did get a couple "ok" brushes from AC Moore. My paint selection is still comprised of My Studio, Apple Barrel, Americana, and Folk Art paints from the local craft stores. 50 cent to $1.50 at the most. Anyone want to recommend somewhere to start I am all ears. I have looked at Citadel kits and Reaper kits. I don't mind spending money but I just want to make sure I am buying the right stuff to start. Anyways, I am going to use this thread to consolidate my paint attempts and will save new threads for my bigger projects. I just bought a handful of Reaper Bones off ebay the other day. I needed a couple minis for my Ranger that I play in another campaign. I also wanted a Paladin as I love the class and will probably play one next. I needed a Hellhound for my game but it didn't arrive in time. I also grabbed an Ettin because I love them and a badass Ogre Chief. Since next week I will be back to playing my Ranger I decided I would start with one of them. I had a really hard time settling on the color scheme and because of my limited paint selection I had to mix to make the colors I wanted. I didn't quite get it but I am pretty happy with the final result. Grenlar the Human Ranger

I use Citadel paints and I can absolutely recommend them. (Not that I've tried anything else in the whole long week I've been painting XD) There is a "Citadel Paint Set Bundle" on the Games Workshop homepage. It is pretty expensive but I think it's worth the price. You get (almost) everything you need and you've seen what I did with them ;-)

I use cheap acrylics and some citadel for unique colors like flesh. Did you add any water to your paints? I paint with almost a milk like mixture of paint. Looks good though.

I just got three pots of Citadel, but I must say I prefer the Reaper so far. The beauty of the Reaper for me is that they have the shade, base, and highlight already mixed. I'm not what you would call artistic, and my attempts at color mixing have much to be desired, so for sheer ease of use, that's what I spent money on. Secondly I think Reaper is less expensive. I spent $5 on one pot of Citadel and the Master series go for $3.29 (cheaper on ebay and such) Of course if you can find them in bulk sets, they are less per bottle.

I use a combination of paints ranging from cheap Wal-Mart sets and hobby paints through artists acrylics and "high end" paints designed for miniatures. I have had great success with all of them. Primarily the cheaper the paint the courser the pigment. So larger areas turn out fine with the cheaper stuff and I use the finer grit pigment paints for small details.
Citadel is over-priced in my opinion. Reaper and P3 by Privateer Press are cheaper (at least in my neck of the woods). The hobby store paints also work well as far as I am concerned.
When painting miniatures, most people (myself included) tend to feel the need to cover in one coat of paint. If you can train yourself to do 2 or 3 thinner coats you will get good coverage and save the details from getting covered over by a thick layer of paint. I sometimes thin my paint with a bit of windex or rubbing alcohol. Not only does this thin the paint but it also helps it dry faster.

Try to paint large, creased things like the cloak with shadows and higlights. Its easy and give a astounding look to such things. Make a smal drop of green on your palete mix with a trace of withe and paint over the higher area's. Make the same with blackand paint the lower areas.
Maybe you tried something like that at the lower edge, maybe you simply paint over it (with a somewaht different mixture) after yo paint the base (I know I allways have to repaint such points because I splatter basepaint over it). But try to work it over the whole cloak, highlight the raised areas.

But try to work it over the whole cloak, highlight the raised areas. On the lower edge of the cloak I mixed it with some yellow to highlight and fade it. What I need to learn is patience and not try to rush things. For this one I didn't give it a real base, I just washed it, dried it and started painting. The one I am working on now I sprayed it with a black primer first. Didn't really seem to make much difference with these minis. The problem I am having is that some of these cheap paints just don't want to cover at all. I am fine with thinning the paint and doing small layers but some of this paint is just junk. I'll get it though. I am about to pull the trigger on the Reaper Master Series Core Set #1 which is the first 108 paints. That should get me a nice start. Reaper also has a Learn to Paint Starter Kit I thought about buying. I figured for $35 I am getting 11 Master Series Paints (Core and HD), 2 Brushes, 3 Reaper Bones minis, and instructions on painting those 3. The price seems right considering what everything included would cost and then I can at least follow the instructions on those 3 and get a better idea of how I "should" be painting.

Reaper bones have a solvent to get them out of the mold. This solvent is hydrophob, so color dont cover it. I brush my reaper bones with a old toothbrush and soap and tehn paint it black. If I have a area where the paint run away I use a second (third) layer black, without aded water. My normal paint need allways be diluted with water-especially paint in face areas because the reaper bones are fairly shallow in such areas.
So, you tried to highlight the cloak edges! I guessed so. This higlightning should worked up to the raised layer at the cloak. search for drybrushing on youtube.

Take a look (search the Internet) for The Dip (Minwax Polyshades Urethane Stain -- shades, as well as putting a urethane armor coating over your paint job...) and Magic Wash techniques (Pledge Floor Shine + acrylic paint, to shadow, and armor up your paint; it is a clear acrylic, intended to cover floors, and be walked upon, with shoes...). Brush them onto your figures, do not physically dip, or dunk, your figures into them; brush off the excess, use the edge of a paper towel to absorb the excess, where it pools, before it hardens... They are worth looking into. Cheers!

Good job for a first attempt at painting, pretty cool mini, too. If you're starting out this good it can only get better, so I'm expecting life-like quality paint jobs from you in a few months.

Love what you did with the Safari Black Dragon... I may have to steal your mod's for my copy. The Safari Green Dragon is the same figure, only painted differently, as well. Never noticed the details of the beard/sideburns, or the mane on the neck. Thanks for pointing those out! I have their Gold Dragon figure, with wings, in my painting queue to be transformed into a Brass Dragon. Should be quick and easy to paint. Will have to slide the Black in beside it, for a quick touch-up job. Cheers!

I started working on a new campaign and have been torn on buying the new Monster Menagerie 2 set. There are a bunch of minis I want but there are also a bunch of minis that I already have way too many of. I have some small adventures I am planning for my home brew campaign so I picked up some stuff I needed. First was a Cyclops. I have a great adventure in my head based around an old Cyclops that is terrorizing a village. Next I am planning an adventure based around the Assassin's guild in my main city of Black Bay. The guild has their hideout in the maze of sewer tunnels below Black Bay and they use Neo-Otyughs as guardians. The leader of the Assassin's guild is a female. I also wanted some evil clerics for an encounter. Lastly I picked up some stuff I wanted such as another Cleric and an Elven Fighter. Grabbed a couple Rat Swarms, some Cerberus, a couple Hippogriffs, a Mummy, and lastly a Clay Golem to whoop some ass with I bought them from Auggies Games which is much cheaper than buying from Coolstuff or Miniature Market. 18 Minis cost me $50 shipped. I know it's more expensive than many on here want to spend but I think it's a better than buying a $90 brick of 36 random minis and getting 20 commons that I already own other versions of.
