I love all three of those pieces you just printed! I don't understand how you printed them all without supports. What settings did you use to accomplish this? What was the temperature of your extruder ? 215° C. I haven't adjusted the speeds of the printing -- they are still at default. I'll probably start playing with that though, sometimes smaller areas get a bit "goopy" cuz the plastic doesn't quite harden correctly before the next layer is printed. I haven't messed with the advanced settings at all. Here's what it is set at. I have successfully used 0.1mm layers -- they just take too damn long on big pieces. I'm happy with the quality at 0.2 -- heck I might even try 0.3 sometime... I scaled this guy up by 300% and he printed pretty well too...

Awesome, thanks! I find a slightly thinned down modeling paste a good way to fill in those print lines. After the modeling paste dries you can smooth it with a very slightly damp brush. I also use some stippling with the model paste.. actually still trying to perfect it but I have had success just messing around with it.

According to the instructor for the course I just took in order to be able to use the 3D printer at my local library, if the change in slope is gradual enough, an outward slope can be created without supports. Think of piping a line of icing that sticks out just a little from the previous line - every line just a smidgeon farther out. Those crystals look to my eye as though they have too much slope for that, but apparently my eye is wrong. I have no expertise, but I've determined that if I print *more than one* object, I often get better results. The plastic cools a bit more between layers, so I have less sagging and goofiness. I printed 2 of the big crystals at the same time.

I wish I had real advice to share, but I'm just doing this by trial and error honestly.

So EPIC FAIL last night! I finally ran out of my first spool of filament (ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED!) and I swapped over to some PLA White by Ohfila. Nope. No good. Yuck.
I spent probably 6 hours trying to dial my printer in. Nothing could make the PLA stick to the platform. Changed temp -- up and down. Changed my blue tape. Changed speeds on the print head... Nothing.
Corners kept peeling up and the rafts kept warping really bad. I've swapped out for some USAFilament PLA green. So far, so good...

Dang.. seems like everyone is having problems with this Monoprice 3D printer. I haven't experienced a significant problem yet (cross fingers).

The USAFilament is working perfectly at 215°C and my old settings. Don't buy Ohfila filament...

Just the material I was putting into the printer. Live and learn. USAFilament seems to be just fine -- great even!

I don't know what brand filament the stuff from Monoprice is but it seems to print ok. I have 2kg that arrived today (ordered before my printer died) that is Hatchbox brand off Amazon. I will let you know this week how it goes. I went through 2 kg spools of the Monoprice stuff ok but they took forever to ship my order so I went Amazon this time. If the Hatchbox stuff is good I will probably just stick with that. Not worth saving a couple bucks on a spool if I find one that prints nice.

Fantastic set! I'll be grabbing those guys for sure. I have a roll of Hatchbox spooled up right now and I think it is great....at least as good as the stuff that came with the printer...maybe better. Hatchbox will be my go to.

Hatchbox will be my go to. Nice to know. At least ordering from Amazon I know the pricing will be consistent and I will get it in 2 days. I now have 3 spools here. White, Black, Brown. I am not sure if this new printer comes with a spool or not, but I have plenty to keep me occupied a couple weeks. =)

In the spirit of the DM's Craft, here's my first .stl to share. It's a remix. I took the OpenForge archway, www.thingiverse.com/thing:522369 and I put some "mist" in it. I made the mist from a cube that I sculpted with a spiral pattern. Did a little grabbing too. Hope you like it. Let me know if you print or use it! Here's the file on Thingiverse. www.thingiverse.com/thing:1375836

Looks nice. I would use it but what did you do to the base of it? Did you shrink the height of the base?
