Howdy all... Someone recently was asking about the steps for creating shingles on a roof the DM Scotty way. It's mentioned in a couple vids but they wanted a bit more information. I cannot recall what thread it was under so hopefully they will see this (or if someone knows the thread I'm talking about you can point them here. I was planning to create a guard house so I took the extra few moments and snapped some pictures of the technique that I use. If anyone has an improvement, please feel free to throw in your 2 cents here. I'll post the finished results over in the community gallery when I'm done. Cheers, MM For the roof, all you need is a piece of standard cardboard with corrugation. Attachment DeletedTake a look at the corrugation orientation. You want to basically go with the corrugation (the "valley's" if you will.) Attachment DeletedMeasure off your tiles. I did half inch tiles here. Using a ball point pen or other weapon of choice poke a hole down into the corrugation and pull along the valley. Attachment Deleted

Cut the strips apart. Attachment DeletedCut some cardstock the width of the structure's roof. You will be gluing the strips to this then attaching to the main structure. Attachment DeletedCut the strips of shingles so that it hangs over the edge of the cardstock squares by half an inch or so. Glue from the bottom up overlapping the strips of "shingles" as you go. Once all the shingles are hot glued to the cardstock, glue the whole piece to the structure. Attachment DeletedIf you're doing some details to the structure, you might want to do those before you put the roof on. Also you might want to paint the roof before gluing it on. In this case I chose to assemble first then paint. Hope someone finds this useful. Cheers, MM

THANK you so much Now i get it… Now i just have to try out different scales What is this house in Cm in length, width and height ? You are welcome mrbulow. I only ask to see what you produce. :-) I cut down the box to 11 cm deep by 10 cm wide by 5 cm high. I did a little work since my original post and here's the progress. Cheers, MM Attachment Deleted

Super thanks I was going to make shingles of card stock and stick them down one at a time that is much easier.

Super thanks I was going to make shingles of card stock and stick them down one at a time that is much easier. My pleasure @gnomesrule. The paint really helps sell it too. Here's the first building I did where I have the painting completed (it's a "fairy house" I'm working on for my daughter.) Wide shot of the Fairy house. Attachment DeletedWide shot of the roof. Attachment DeletedCloser shot of the shingles (and you can see the chimney as well.) Attachment Deleted

Yeah I think I am going to do a fairy house for my daughter soon . . . though I am going to shingle it with pinecone spikes. A woodland shack might also get that roofing.

Super thanks I was going to make shingles of card stock and stick them down one at a time that is much easier. Not actually too hard to do really. If you get the right cardstock thickness, cut it into strips about 3/4 to 1 inch wide, as long as you're roof is in length. Then, cut "shingles" by cutting halfway through the cardstock every centimeter or so (doesn't have to be precise...uneven shingles add character!). Lay a flat piece of cardboard over your roof pitch, and then glue these strips down one over the other (starting from the bottom) so that the frayed cardstock resembles overlapping shingles ...this is how I made my own mausoleum roof when I crafted it (before DM Scotty showed us his method). The newer method DM Scotty shows us is more convenient all the way around, but does make it harder to represent old roofs with uneven shingles.

I bet peeling off the layer and showing the corrugation and painted orange would look very close to European clay roofs.

Its not mine. I googled fairy houses and one that caught my eye had a ramshackle roof made from the pine cone barbs. Looks like they cut them from the center and laid the thinner side at the top with round edge down literally shingled the roof that way. Yeah its on the list. My daughter plays with the action figures and the playhouses more than my son. He is all about the tablet.
