Been toying with the idea of playing 40K again, and bringing my long hibernating Tyranids out from the warp. The modern 40k rules have wonderful rules for a new model called the Tryanid Tyrannocyte. It's a big, ugly, living, hot air baloon with guns and tentacles that can carry 20 smaller critter, or one large critter, inside it and across the battlefield. I just started playing with scrap and and a glue gun, and this is what I have so far. I just realised I need to leave for work. I'll post some more pics of the build at ealier stages later today, and progress pics as I have them.

Started with the air sacks underneath Then I went to work on the orifice and gun ports on the top Then I started working on the armor plated sections. In the picture there are 4 layers of overlapping plates. There is an additional 5th layer, but I had scrapped the initial version of it. I mounted it on a 2" piece of clear pipe and used hot glue to make tendril like textures on it. The base itself is foam core covered in a layer of hot glue. I added some plastic tubing for a base for the gun barrels. Still need to texture them. I added 5 3" tenticles underneath made of thick floral wire and textured them with hot glue Still want to add 5 more tenticles to the main body, and little talons to the ends of the tentacles.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. I've added 5 tentacles coming off the body. Thick floral wire, coated in hotglue. An unexpected benefit of that method is that the tentacles are posable. Didn't expect that. You can also see how I did the smaller armor plates. Cut, folded, and then creased to give it more of a 3D presence. Here, the ventral tentacles have been reposistioned off the ground, and hot glued on talons were added to each of the tentacles. Also, half round beads were glued here and there on the upper body, representing smaller gas bladders, for extra texture.

Love this build. I'll blatantly copy this honor you by using your work as an inspiration as soon as I have a crafting space!

Please take pictures if you do.
I'm sure you'll find some way to improve on the process.

So it's a bigger, nastier version of the Mycetic Spore?

Basically, yes. GW never produced an official Mycetic Spore model, while third parties and customizers did everywhere, so they changed the concept from drop pod to deepstriking monstrous creature transport that has shooting attacks, like a drop pod.
The points bump keeps people from spamming them on everything, like people where inclined to do with Mycetic Spores, but the increased utility keeps them still desirable.

Start with one Dollar Store Football Cut it in half, for 2 Sporocyst hulls I drew a pentagram on the bottom and used that to divide it into 5 sections Forgot to take pictures of these steps. If anyone is interested, just ask and I'll be happy to do my best to explain what I did.
Top Down view Still need to add armor plates, gun ports, tentacles, etc.. but not off to a bad start.

Figured with those Sporocysts that I'm going to need more spore mines A round head push pin, 5 pieces of 1" wire, some hot glue, and a burned index finger. Then I put a little paint on them, so they would be easier to see

Yeah I know 40K isn't exactly the game of choice on these forums, but the scratch built nature of the project and how the techniques could be used to make more fantasy related, made me think they would be at home here.
Tauster, those are some great ideas for tentacles production. I'll have to try them out.

Added detail to the Mucolid. Round cratery things up front, some exhausts in the back, and an anterior fin.
I don't know why, but I can't shake the image of Squidward when I look at it

Tyrannocyte Work In Progress Number Three !! I rebased all of them to 100mm round bases. Originally thought they belonged on the new oval bases, like the Carnifex. I have the parts to make another half dozen Tyannocytes/Sporocysts, but I think I'm going to slow down. At least until I can up with an army list that would use that many.
