I've seen that video, but I am making scrolls using onionskin paper I have saved from long ago. Don't even know if you can get it these days. And I still prefer the tea method for aging paper. How big are your minis? They look as tall or taller than the 2-inch bookshelves - or is that a perspective issue? Those minis aren't the ones I'd be using. They are on 30mm bases and are between 32-35mm scale (squeezed them onto 30mm base). I'll be using 28mm on 25mm bases. It's also perspective issue. Down low the eye level of both the skeleton and the knight can't see over the bookcase.

.. I still prefer the tea method for aging paper. Mind sharing your technique? I have both green tea and black tea here. Black Tea is PG Tips if that helps (lol). (PG Tips is yummy tea.. now I've talked myself into a cuppa.)

Black is better unless you want greenish paper for some reason. 3 or 4 bags per 2 cups of water or the equivalent amount of loose tea. Steep it a while - you want a pretty dark tea - then remove the bags or strain it if you used loose tea.
You can dip the paper if the pieces are small enough or put the sheet in a jelly roll pan [flat baking sheet with a rim all around] and pour the tea over it. Leave the paper in the tea until it is as dark as you like. Various ways to dry - on a cake rack over waxed paper or paper towels, on a cheap plastic tablecloth, or cover your ironing board with something that is expendable or cleanable and iron the paper dry. Depending on the drying method, you can get anything from a flat piece of dyed paper to a pretty crinkly piece of dyed paper.
If you are hand dipping, remember that the tea is pretty hot at first.
I have heard you can get an orangish color from some herbal teas. I never wanted that shade, so I haven't tried it and don't know which would work.
You can do the same with coffee, but I find it easier to get the shades I want with tea.
Forgot to say that you boil the water and make the tea just as usual, only darker than I usually drink it

ScrollsSo I took some of that paper I stained with a watered down Americana Cocoa & watered down Americana Burnt Umber, and made some scrolls with it. Burnt the edges with a lighter on a couple for some cool effect. Let me know what you think.

Thanks Margaret. I'll try the tea method sometime soon. Here is a photo of a 28mm mini standing next to the bookcase. (All my bookcases are the same height.) So, easily tall enough to block line of sight -- which is important in Frostgrave as you know. I don't want the bookcases to be too tall because even standing you have to move around the table to see all the minis, and you have to get your hands in there.

Thanks for showing the scale.
I agree about the height issue for playability. When I read that scenario, I wondered if the author had calculated how many linear feet of shelves it called for and how the teams would maneuver in the maze.

Thanks for showing the scale. I agree about the height issue for playability. When I read that scenario, I wondered if the author had calculated how many linear feet of shelves it called for and how the teams would maneuver in the maze. He said, "The whole game board represents the underground library , and should be a maze of corridors representing the vast shelves." Some people have taken this to mean the normal game board with ruins etc.. not actual library bookshelves. But that doesn't make sense to me. Kind of a weird scenario if you ask me unless it was actually a library. My imagination isn't that good to imagine ruins pieces being bookshelves.

Frostgrave BeastiaryTime to order beasts I am needing to fill out the Frostgrave beastiary requirements. UndeadI already have the skeletons, armored skeletons, ghouls and zombies covered with the nice Undead Encounters Box Kit I purchased from Annie the other day. The kit however does not include a wraith or vampire -- I need one of each. So for the wraith I am going to be placing an order with Reaper Miniatures for the Grave Wraith. It's $2.99 for the bones version. Also I am going to be placing an order with Reaper for this Vampire. It's name is Tepes Tejan, is metal and costs $4.99. (I don't know who Tepes Tejan is--duck--but I thought the miniature looked the best of the affordable bunch.) That satisfies the undead category now on to Animals. AnimalsI already have the two Ice Toads and White Gorilla -- 3D printed and flea market purchase, respectively. I also got a large snow leopard-like cat from the flea market. I still need a bear, boar, giant rats (4), ice spiders (2), wild dogs (2) and wolves (2). I can't find a good affordable bear that looks good. I saw some really nice dire bears on Reaper's site but they were like $12+ (no thanks). I'll probably just find a plastic one from the flea market (heck I might even have one laying around). For the boar and giant rats I am ordering from Annie's (The Dice Bag Lady) store the " Boar and Giant Rats" set for 6 quid. It's only 3 rats--need up to four; however, there is an undead rat in the undead kit I mentioned above, which I recently purchased--I am content with that. For the Ice Spiders I've decided to order two of these Giant Spiders from Reaper for $2.49 each: I didn't like the look of Frostgrave's "official" wild dogs set. I do like their Wolves x 4 offering though and am purchasing it from Annie for 6 quid. Since I only really need two wild dogs and two wolves, I am just going to use the Wolves x4 for them all (for the time being at least). And that's it for the Animals category. Next up is the Constructs section. To be continued in the next post (soon).

Frostgrave Beastiary: ConstructsSmall Construct: I'll just paint a tiny miniature as a statue -- done. Medium Construct: I have 6 of these statues (with 1 1/2" bases) along with plinths -- six unique adventurer-type figures (not all look alike). I got the figurines from a Toys-R-Us Mythic bucket and the plinths are 3D crafted by me for printing -- see "Plinth 01 by Jennifer" on thingiverse. Large Construct: On the way to Dallas from Tulsa, there is a shop on the highway that has these awesome ceramic steampunk/mechanical looking dragons for $12. I'll be using this for my large construct. It'll be a couple months before I am back that way, but well worth the wait. The mechanical dragon referring to looks similar to this: Next up are Demons, next post.

The bear from a woodland animals set should be OK if you see one at the flea market. I have a bin of those plastic play animals to entertain grandkids and visiting neighbor kids, so I could just fish one out when I need one. From the description in the Frostgrave book, it's not a polar bear, so it doesn't even have to be painted white.
Something like this - they look like the same mold as mine, although I don't know the actual size of these. [http://www.target.com/p/terra-miniature-wild-animal-collection-by-battat/-/A-15842685#prodSlot=_1_18]
I have some blue spiders in with a mix of spiders I picked up at Dollar Tree, but they are really too large for the Frostgrave spiders. I was thinking about these, since they are 1 inch in length and the price is reasonable: [http://www.amazon.com/Transparent-Spiders-Plastic-Assorted-Approx/dp/B00KYB5D48/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1436247316&sr=8-4&keywords=mini+plastic+spiders&pebp=1436247358232&perid=0ES2BD6PVS91YYFZW782]. I expect I will need spiders for various purposes in the future.

Frostgrave Beastiary: DemonsI need one each: imp, minor demon and major demon. Also need 1 more major demon: a genie For my imp and minor demon I am ordering from Annie (thedicebaglady.net) the Imp & Minor Demon set for 6 quid. For the Major demon, I am doing a 3D printed one, to keep costs down (photo is of meph's major demon): Another Major Demon that is needed is a Genie, for a particular scenario. So I printed one on my 3D printer : Next up are Miscellaneous Creatures.

Frostgrave Beastiary: Miscellaneous CreaturesI need 1 frost giant, 4 giant worms, 2 snow trolls and one werewolf. For the Frost Giant, I just ordered a Ral Partha from eBay for around $14.50 shipped: For the Giant Worms I am crafting my own Giant Frost Worms: For the snow trolls and werefolf, I am ordering them both from Annie. Two Yetis for the snow trolls for 6.50 quid. And the werewolf I am getting from her for 7 quid: I would of gotten the more affordable Reaper Bones werewolf for $1.99 but they are out of stock. And that's it for the beastiary.

Next time, check out the old Mage Knight figures. They are commonly available on e-Bay, for less than $5 + S/H. They come pre-painted, in varying levels of quality. Many only need The Dip, to be table ready. They have figures which would work for everything you've listed (except for the Frost Giant), though they go by very different names. Quality, and size, of MK figures varies, considerably, so careful shopping is necessary. The prices are good, and they're pre-painted, which helps tremendously. Just a suggestion. Cheers!

Thanks for the idea. But I don't want pre-painted -- I want to practice painting miniatures, customize to my liking and I think I could do a better paint job than a factory. I also am picky with respect to sculpts -- I spent a lot of time hand picking the ones I mentioned above, out of dozens. I haven't seen any Mage Knight figurines which I feel would fit in well with the theme I'm looking for, for my Frostgrave board.

There are many very cool creatures that would fit very well to the frostgrave theme.
You can repaint most MK monsters. Don't bother with removing the original paint-job first. Just use it as a primer.

Just use it as a primer. There probably are I guess. I just can't find any. I searched for several creatures on ebay using "mage knight" in the search string. e.g. $5 ebay Mage Knight werewolf: Looks cartoony and lacks detail. In comparison, the one I intend on getting: Btw, I haven't placed these orders with Reaper and Annie yet.. planned on doing so soon. So if you know of any worthwhile substitutes other than Reaper and Annie's site, please let me know.

How about a Mage Knight Frost Wolf? That one looks pretty nice for Mage Knight, that I've seen. But that mini is $9, the same price I am getting the other werewolf for. And the other one is metal and paint free, with even more detail I believe--Otherworld Miniatures make some really nice minis, love the detail. Look at that fur detail on the Otherworld Miniature werewolf.
