Wow, Curufin. You've come a long way on your journey. The Troll looks amazing so far. Nice torso, almost a pity to cover it up with that great looking mail and armor:-). I haven't started yet, but I sure as hell feel the pressure now:-) I had to finish an Ice Tree for the CraftWar first, and the next 4 days are booked, so I hope my Fimo behaves...which it probably won't. I'm very impressed with your skills and the details you've put into such small miniatures. How tall will the Troll be? I'm thinking mine will be at least 2 inches, probably more like 3.

The troll is coming along nicely curufin. Loving the detail in your sculpts.

so I hope my Fimo behaves...which it probably won't. I'm curious: why, or rather how, wouldn't it behave? :-) I've only tried it for the heads in my Wookiee Beastrider craft, and at that time I had not yet seen a Tom Mason on sculpting. The clay got to warm, because I tried to shape it with my fingers, while holding it in my other hand. This meant that it would not hold the shape, and my heads kept changing(misbehaving). It was a beginner mistake, and I hope my newfound knowledge about sculpting will remedy this. But I'm sure it's a lot harder than it looks:-)

Ah. Yes, it can "move" a little if it gets too warm. The times I've made minis with it I've always made it in steps. Baking, adding more smaller bits, baking, even smaller bits, etc.

I can wait (and am nervous) to see your troll creation. My troll will be almost exactly 2 inches with a base.

I haven't checked on this thread in a while. Man have I missed a lot! The troll is looks great. Keep up the good work. Unfortunately I've been busy with another project, so I've neglected my sculpting. The last sculpting I did was a half formed Bantha that looks like a naked mole muppet.

Thanks, Michka, for putting Bantha into my head. That's going to be crafted now. Damn that Imperial Assault has got me hooked on Star Wars again:-) I do have to finish my Wampa-craft first, maybe do a Jedi, if I'll find the Fimo, to my liking. But then, it's Bantha-poodoo time...

Well, I know you're gonna have to wait:-) I know I'm nervous, that this sculpting won't be as easy as I hope. But I really can't wait to try it out. It would be nice to craft something, that was not in the Heman-scale or bigger:-) I think we all got problems if Grinningskull posts his troll. That miniature looks pretty over the top. Have you seen it?

That looks too good, Curufin:-) You are stressing me out! Love how the head came out. And he's holding a severed head:-) My idea for my own Troll was that he was holding a female adventurer in one hand, and a crude hammer in the other., but I don't have a female adventurer, so she'll have to be crafted as well. I probably won't have the time for that:-(
Alot of details in the armor/clothing, it's gonna look so good when it's painted. Sadly I have not started yet, and this makes it even worse;-) I'm really impressed. Amazing job!!!
Sculpting time?

It was just a practice head. The actual troll took probably 15-20 hours of honest sculpting with maybe another 5 hours worth of me just holding it in my hand trying to decide what to do next. It's hard to say, I wasn't keeping track. Yesterday, I knocked it off the table and broke both of the arms. I spend an hour gluing it back together. The super sculpey firm is quire brittle after it is baked . I hope you get the time to put a troll together.

15-20 hours? I had hoped for less. Mostly because that's probably my maximum crafting time, including recording and editing...No new music for the Troll, I guess:-) And no fooling around(playing) with it either;-)
I feel your pain with the dismembered Troll. The Flesh Golem I made for a previous Craftwar, which weighs 200 grams, fell to the floor on the last day. Most of the hotglued ropebits broke off, along with the paint it was attached to:-( Also, the basket made of pasta broke, so I had to redo it. One of the worst things that can happen to stuff you spend so much time on:-( And we only have our own clumsiness to blame. Good thing, you were able to fix it.
A Troll will be crafted, but I'm not optimistic about how it's gonna look. Will try to get something done tomorrow, then maybe vent my frustration in your thread, if you don't mind:-)

I started the mold-making process. I'm going to attempt to make a pewter troll mini for the miniwar. Prepping the first half of the mold: Trying to de-gas the RTV mold rubber. This may not end well....the mold rubber is over a year past it's expected shelf life. The rubber is so thick that most of the bubbles cant escape the top layer of rubber. I just hope that I pulled them away from the sculpted mini. Im also hoping that the first half will have cured by tonight so I can get the other half poured. Then give it all night to set up...

It works best if you paint on the rubber compound to the figure's surface, then pour it on top of that. This will eliminate bubbles on the surface of the master.
Had a friend who made pirate copies of some GW figures, many years ago. He used high temp RTV for his molds. I didn't care for what he was doing, but I was quite impressed with his castings, as it was hard to tell the difference between his, and the originals. If I create any original sculpts, and I want to make molds of them, I wll use high temp RTV, after seeing his results. He told me his molds were good for ~100 castings, by the way. YMMV. Cheers!

I just poured the second half. I did a brush coat before the pour so fingers crossed. If it doesn't turn out im blaming it on the old RTV. It will be ready for the channel cutting in the morning.... then I will melt some pewter. I will post an update in the morning.
