This question sort of spins off of Autolycus' question in this threadI am looking for an alternative rules system. I have come to believe my players don't really want to play an RPG, they want to play a skirmish wargame with some RPG elements. So I am hunting for an alternative rules set that is less clunky on the battlemap than 3.x/PF but still has enough character design options to create unique and interesting characters. Most important are in-combat speed of play and character options. I have been looking at the Savage Worlds starter rules but I get the sense that most similarly themed characters will be built very very similar if not identical to each other, despite what the rule book claims. Does anyone have opinions about this? I'll probably take a look at DnD 4e and DnD Next, but I am not hopeful that either of those systems will be the right fit, judging by the size of the rule books alone. So I would love to hear other people's experiences, especially if your table has similar needs to mine. I am hoping to solicit some opinions and possibly get a few more rules sets on my radar to review for a good fit for my table. Thanks!

I've run Savage Worlds before and you'd be surprised how different the characters can be! One very important observation that I've found with SW, it tends to be a more cinematic style game, where PCs tend to be able to handle lots of attacks and shrug them off. But that's one of the main advantages of SW.

One complaint that I have seen with Savage worlds is the difficulty in handling battles with more than a small handful of opponents. The no. Of required actions to resolve one single hit can be quite daunting with more than say 6 or 8 combatants (even then it can be frustrating).
If they're wanting small scale wargaming, then I'd turn your focus to wargame rules. Surprisingly, Warhammer has some light RP elelments (oft ignored but they do exist) in their wargames. You could look at some wargaming systems and look for something flexible enough to implement expanded roleplaying.

Song of blades and heroes is an excellent skirmish game.

DM scotty, I concur. Might also look at Barebones RPG.. though I have only played it once.. it might not be what I think it is, depending on how the ref modified things.
