I got a bunch of hex bases, laser cut from thin plywood and they work great, but this ain't about them. No, the other day I ran across this video that sort of shook my world view.
What he has there is ceramic floor tiles. I went and had a browse through the Home Depot site and for ten bucks you can get 30 two inch hexagonal porcelain tiles or 144 one inch porcelain tiles.
Okay, so I found that pretty cool, myself.

I've used hexagonal ceramic tile as game pieces and game boards for decades. I've got a couple of hexagonal chess boards made with 1" ceramic tiles. I have not used them as bases though, they are pretty heavy and bulky compared to the wooden disks I buy in bulk for that same purpose. But they would certainly work that way.
I'll also plug US Toy as the guy in the video did. That's a great place to go and wander around to find gaming supplies. That's where I get most of my animals, dinosaurs and bugs, usually in bags of a dozen for a few bucks each bag.
