This idea was inspired by one of DM Scotty's table top vids. In it he had a giant floating Crystal...which sparked my imagination.
So what I want to use this crystal for is an Indiana jones type map puzzle But instead of a crystal in a medallion using sunlight, it will go like this:
The giant crystal is tied to a small crystal. (Which the PC's will have to locate) There are two rooms that are required to show a location on a map.
The map room will contain a giant map of a continent on a wall in a room with a giant floating crystal as in DM Scotty's Vid in the center of the room floating 10' in the air...the crystal is held up and slowly oscillating by an ancient spell.
The Key room can be in the same dungeon or half way around the world (I will have it on a same Island, but far apart from each other)
Here in this room is the Indiana jones like setting with a hole in a certain place and a pedestal in the center of the room. The small version of the crystal that the PC's had to find will be placed on the pedestal (I think I will use moon light) at a certain time the light will hit it, but instead of shining through it...it will shine through the large crystal in the map room...thus the party will have to be split to see the results
I plan to have an area on the map pulse with the moon light as the large crystal spins & moon light runes scroll across the map that the PC's will need to decipher as well

I was just watching a show on the legend of Crystal Skulls. They say that the purpose of them is somewhat similar to this. Mayhap you could have the main crystal a map to or portal for a cosmic location, and have the smaller crystals required to activate, requiring quests, journeys, rival adventuring groups (not all evil), etc to get all of them. Then you can use all sorts of other traps and puzzles
