BattleMasters by Milton Bradley, figures by Games Workshop, Lordly Knight figures: 20+ years in the painting queue, finally finished. Great example of simple block painting, followed by The Dip Technique, brushed on: Original, unpainted, bare plastic miniature Horse and Rider (captured off of e-Bay, sorry for the poor quality); horse Dip'ed, but rider still only block painted; finished miniature, Dip'ed and matte clear coated, ready for the table. They look even better at arm's length, which is how they will be viewed, 98% of the time.
I played in a Con of the North BattleSystem game, in the 1990's, wherein I was running the Undead, trying to boil out of our graveyard, to recruit the Living to our side... We were attacked by a Unit of Ultra-Heavy Paladin Cavalry, which were similar models to these: plate barded heavy war horses, ridden by Platemail armored Paladins. The 6 figure Paladin Unit charged my 50 figure Skeleton Cavalry Unit (Light Cavalry). After the dust settled (the charge attack was resolved), I had around 27 Skeleton Cavalry still standing! I inflicted zero Hits on the Paladins. We sat there, locked in combat, for several Turns, me watching my Skeleton Cavalry Unit dwindle down by 50% losses each Turn; my Skellies inflicted three Hits on one 6-Hit Paladin figure, before the last Skeleton Cavalry figure was eliminated. It was hilarious to watch the Paladin Unit commander grimace as he just could not kill off the pitiful Skeleton Cavalry (Undead never check Morale, they fight until they are eliminated, or commanded to do something else.
These figures remind me, very much, of that epic BattleSystem game, from the 1990's. I plan to employ these six Ultra-Heavy Cavalry (equal to a medieval Heavy Tank!) in some of my future BattleSystem games, as well. I would love to re-create that epic battle of the Undead versus the Living, to see if we can re-capture the zest from that game, so we can create more epic memories, for my current batch of players. Cheers!
