I bought a couple of sets of Caesar's Dwarves to use as Hill Dwarves, up to 4-1/2 feet tall (Mountain Dwarves are more than 4-1/2 feet tall), per Gary Gygax's 1977 1e AD&D Monster Manual. They seemed to fit the bill, averaging only 20mm tall (a 6-foot Human would equate to 25mm tall in 1/72 scale, so these Dwarves are 4.8 feet, or 4 feet 10 inches tall. Note that my other Dwarf figures are around 22mm tall, so these fit in with what I have for Mountain Dwarves, in spite of their height. Most of my Humans are closer to 28mm tall, so it all works out close enough for me and my games.
I finished 27 of the Dwarven Infantry figures. I have another 27 Infantry figures, the same make-up as these, to paint yet, along with 15 Dwarven Crossbowmen. Hoping to finish the remainder of the Caesar Dwarves within the next month. I have a 2e BattleSystem game coming up in August, which will call for Hill Dwarves, alongside of some Mountain Dwarves.
Anyway, here is your chance to see what the Caesar Dwarves might look like painted. Bear in mind that I am an army painter: I do simple block painting, followed by The Dip Technique, brushed on, with a final matte clear coat to dull the shine on the satin Minwax Antique Walnut urethane stain.
I also finished up four older Grenadier Dwarven Crossbowmen figures I've had in my painting queue for more than 20 years. These are much larger, and still shorter than 28mm! These Grenadier plastic Dwarves form the bulk of my Mountain Dwarf Army. I used E6000 Glue to attach some thumb tacks to their backs, as shields. I used a needle-nose pliers to bend the tack shaft back and forth until they snapped off from the dome of the tack. They have raised designs which make them quite decorative. These Grenadier figures have a round sprue in the middle of their backs, which these tacks cover nicely. Cheers!
