A friend asked if he could purchase one of my Iron Wind Metals Dwarven Ram Cavalry figures (he gave one away, wanted to replace it). So I cried, "Uncle!", and I ordered six more, figuring I would expand my Ram Cavalry by five, selling one off. He has not set up a time to come over and buy it from me, so I may augment my forces by six, rather than five...
I also decided to order additional Gnomes from Essex Gnomes army. I have quite a few, but it seems like it is never enough... I ordered 15 Spearmen, the most common army weapon ever (inexpensive to build, minimal basic training required to use effectively in battle in large formations, and the second rank can attack over the shoulders of the front rank...). I have plenty of Kobolds in my paint queue, and I have around 200+ Goblins, which have been in plenty of battles, already. There is also my Orc army of around 50 figures. I love the idea of running some battles between Dwarves and Gnomes, battling the smaller humanoid races. Just need to finish the Kobolds, and i will be able to run many a fun battle of the wee races.
In the past, each army sat in my painting queue for more than a decade. My biggest issue was deciding on a color scheme (talk about White Page Syndrome -- and I thought that only affected writers...). Now, I have my paint schemes ironed out for Dwarf Ram Cavalry, and for Gnome infantry. I hope to knock these figures out of the queue quickly.
Here is an image of the primed Dwarven Ram recruits, standing next to their battle hardened comrades ready for all comers. Here is an image of some of the Gnome Spearmen, alongside their battle ready comrades in arms.
One of the best things about the Gnomes and the Dwarves (more the Gnomes, actually) is that at arm's length, on the tabletop, the Gnomes can represent Dwarves, and the Dwarves can represent the Gnomes, if the need arises. In a recent BattleSystem game, I had to press the Gnomes as stand-in's for additional Dwarves, as I did not have enough. I prefer not to do that, but if necessary, I will. None of the other players realized the stand-in's were not actually Dwarves, so I call it a success.
I have some 1/72 scale (very loose term...) Dwarves which I need to paint up. They are shorter than my other Dwarves, so I planned to use them as Hill Dwarves, which are shorter, and smaller of stature, than Mountain Dwarves. The Hill Dwarves will do nicely as Gnomes, better than my larger Mountain Dwarf figures. Need to get busy painting... Cheers!
