Where did you get the wagon wheels from? Those are the pieces that I've found the hardest to find to make things with. Hey sotf !! I'm afraid erho is correct, kinda surprised by his accuracy. They are modified lego wagon wheels. My girlfriend gave me a box of lego stuff awhile back, and instead of trying to scratch build the wheels, I used the leggo ones. Then modified them a bit, to make them appear more realistic. Here's what I did, sandpaper to the wheels, rough up the surface, the tooth picks with points at both ends...cut one end off and using elmers wood glue max, glue it into a spoke of the wheel, and repeat...a lot of times. Atter they have all dried, go back with snips, cut off the excess toothpicks to fit the outer edge, then add a plastic piece for the center hub, prime, paint, detail, done!

I'm 99% sure they are LEGO. I have several I tried to cast, unsuccessfully its amazing but its true..my daughters has a lot of lego stuff and it has a lot of bits that i " took " ( stolen, what a ugly dad i am ) to use for many projects... well, i think we all are crafters, so we always take a look of the options out there right? cast is make a copy? and when you have it, what material do you use to cast it?? cheers!

I used this: Smooth-OnMix equal parts and let set for a few hours and its a flexible mold to cast stuff out of. If you have a small piece use Silicon caulk and corn starch:

A while back I purchased a bunch of Lego Wagon wheels to use for my weird west campaing. They work great for buckboard style wagons, stage coaches, etc. There's a picture of that wagon in this thread the second post down. I really need to get back to posting pictures in that thread!

What an awesome ballista! And thanks a million for the silicone&cornstarch mould toturial. I've made those moulds for about 4 years now, but I hadn't known about mixing oil into the mass. My molds lose their flexibility after a few years, so maybe the oil will prevent that. You can use whatever acrylic color you have - I don't think a special brand is required. I have a tube of the cheapest wall mixing color (...that never seems to end - you need only a small squirt for mix) and it works just fine. Also, I always used clear silicone instead of white; no idea if this makes any difference...? I was surprised that he lets the mold sit for only 20 mins - I gave my molds at least 12 hrs, for large molds a complete day.

The decorative parts of the limbs are clock hands, the black pieces on the lower set of limbs are from a storm window spacer set that came with some replacement windows... What I'm really surprised about...no one asked if it shoots or not

Does it shoot?

The original ballista was capable of firing a single bolt about 3 feet, thought that it might be a bad idea, so I rebuilt it. I also decided in the build process to add 2 extra limbs, make it look similar to a dwarven wind lance. So the remake is not capable of firing...but the catapult does

The catapult would be great to launch unbalanced dice out a window!

I'm not sure I'd launch an unbalanced dice to make it go out the window, because it's unbalanced it might hit the window frame instead, bounce back inside and strike someone in the eye!

The catapult would be great to launch unbalanced dice out a window! I thought you were supposed to keep those dice, cause you always know what numbers they land on
