Since my first post, I've done a couple more monster projects. I also have an older, simpler project I figured I'd share. As before, each of these projects starts with Dollar Tree materials as the base. The first was inspired by the Miniature Mashup's video about a fire giant. I saw a pro wrestler figure that looked like he would serve the purpose well. I chopped his appendages off and used hot glue to repose him in a better stance. The armor is cut from index cards and made rigid with super glue; the leather bindings are electrical tape; the skull is from a Halloween ring. I painted it with craft paint. This next project grew out of my earlier desert giant and pyramid project. I liked the idea of Arabian Nights style monsters (with an undead theme). So, when I saw a skeleton bird at the Dollar Tree during Halloween, I immediately thought, "Roc Zombie!" This was a simple papier mache job, once I'd trimmed off the anatomically wrong bones and reattached the appendages in a more dynamic pose. I thought about adding some sparse feathers, but decided the Thanksgiving Turkey/Velociraptor look was pretty cool. All the paint is craft paint. This last is an old project: my first, actually. I wanted a giant beetle that spawned huge larvae out of pods in its back. So, I found a big beetle at the Dollar Tree, glued on some beads, added some wings (plastic spoons) and larger mandibles (plastic fork tines). The larvae are cast with hot glue. All the paint is craft paint. This design was meant to be used with an encounter based on the Runehammer Egg Hunt video (Drunkens & Dragons that was!). It worked well, I'm told.

"Daaaannnngggg! That is mighty fine work! Hubba, hubba, Baby!!!" [Hangs head. Walks away, mumbling incoherently. Obviously dejected, possibly even depressed.] "Mumble, mumble, mumble..."

Here's my latest: I call it the Shadow Sphinx. Whether it's an undead sphinx or a sphinx from the Plane of Shadow is really up to the DM I made it for: I just got the idea for the build, and wanted to see if I could pull it off. I'm pretty pleased with the results. The mask is meant to (1) be an artifact the heroes can obtain, and (2) cover for the fact that I can't sculpt a suitable face! The materials are all pretty cheap: a DT lion toy; wings from a DT pegasus toy; the head of a DT ninja toy; craft foam (mask, ears, facial alterations); and black yarn. The rest is white glue, hot glue, and craft paint. It was a pretty quick project once I had thought out the process. I'm especially please with the mane, which is just yarn stiffened with successive coats of white glue until it forms a stiff, solid surface. I also stuffed the hollow lion body with aluminum foil to give it a little weight.

Wow! Did not realize you added the extra mane... Thought it was part of the molded toy! Very impressive work! Thank you for sharing. This turned out quite nice! Cheers!

Made some more giants! This time, they're "Cannibal Hillbilly"-style hill giants (and an ettin cousin, I guess). These are also based on Dollar Tree wrestlers, though with some other toy bits added to the ettin and to "Big Mama".

Those are fantastic! Love the 'hillbilly' take on Hill Giants! Your players are going to have sooo much fun battling Momma Eunice (Carol Burnett Show reference), and her brood... I would run them with a southern accent to really play up the hillbilly theme, as long as none would take offence (none intended, of course, just part of the meme). Thanks for sharing! Cheers!

One of the groups I run for would find the 'hillbilly' Hill Giants hilarious! I'm sure they would have great fun dealing with them!

Thanks! It just seemed like a fun riff on the type: sort of Deliverance meets Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Maybe call it "The Hill(Giant)s Have Eyes"?
