I made a customizable 3D printable flying stand base. Been working great with wooden bamboo skewers painted black. Was wondering if someone knew of a good affordable source for clear acrylic rod about 1/8 inch (3mm) in diameter. I can cut with a saw and then glue in the acrylic rod to the printed base instead of bamboo skewer.
Not very impressed with what I saw on Amazon, as all the rod looked scratched up in the images.

I just did a quick search and came up with these cheap transparent acrylic rods. Saw them to length and you're set. As an alternative, look for curtain rods which also come in acrylic and transparent varieties.

I just had a closer look at the auction, and the smallest diameter available is 5mm (though I'm trying to get my head round the idea of a 60mm diameter rod...)

5mm diameter is fine with me. I've made a few that should be around 5mm; they are a bit less than 100mm long, with the upper end having a neodym glued on and standing in the base of a disposable champaign glass. They work perfectly and do not bend in the slightest. I wouldn't use the 60mm diameter things; anything over 10mm diameter is probably total overkill when used as fly stands. You can see them here, here, and here.

Not clear acryllic, though I think they carry them as well, but CorSec Engineering has some great metal flight stands that you can extend and collapse.

Check the beverage section at your local supermarket. Look for drink stir sticks. They usually come in a variety of shapes. I use white mini staws, about 1/4" in dia. and 5" long. I have seen clear solid ones, but were bigger than 3mm. I have also seen sword shaped ones but they are big.

My favorite source for clear plastic tubing - www.drumstick.com/assets/images/products/photos/nestle-pushup-orange-large.jpgThe picture shows a white tube, but the ones I get at Kroger have a clear tube.

...aaand JACKPOT! Disposable cutlery comes in white and transparent - the handles are perfect for fly stands, and I don't think we'll find a cheaper source. Example, found after 20sec of research on ebay: 100(!) transparent plastic spoons for 7,45€, shipping included. That's probably more fly stands than you'll ever need, and you'll have the spoon's business ends left over. 100 identical shapes that practically beg to be turned into something cool.... giant scales, spell marker for force spells like Shields or Tenser Floating Disc (imagine an army of miniatures on fly stands made of... woah, wait - you might just glue them on top of the fly stands and put your miniature in!

I got 100 forks, each with 4 tines for £1, that's 400 flying bases for £1. of course, I needed to buy the discs, but I'm sure there's plenty of cheap sources for those too.
