I'd like to sculpt some terrain and minis and then 3D scan to upload to Thingiverse.
I was wondering have they become affordable yet? One that does a nice job? Don't care how long it takes, just that it looks good.
I know electronics so I don't mind making my own if there is a good DIY project.

EDIT: e.g. I want to sculpt some cavern walls with sculpey, much like the ones you get in Hirst arts molds 81 and 82 (google image them). They are pretty nice for a 2.5D next approach.. one big cavern mat and just the pile of walls. YOu could make any shape or size you want.. like if I do the Losts Mines of PHandelver for example. I was thinking of buying Hirst Arts molds 81 and 82 but they are quite pricey and I don't want the mess, weight and destructibility of the hydrostone. I don't want to resin cast them either due to the expense, mess and the fact they eat up the molds more quickly. I'd love to be able to sculpt a new one each day, bake it.. get feedback.. then scan it and upload it. After a while, I could upload a nice variety.

Researched this a few years ago - but the projects ended up in the "i'll get to it soon" pile while waiting for parts.. >_> anyway start here; www.sjbaker.org/wiki/index.php?title=A_Simple_3D_ScannerI seem to rember that there were also som andoid apps that could do it, but as I recall they had very poor surface reconstruction.

As far as I know, that is not really viable (yet) unfortunately. The scanners I've seen begin at a few hundred euro, but most are much more expensive. Also, I doubt they'd be able to scan an object as small as a mini at a useful resolution. And even then, all scans require quite a bit of clean up and fixing before they're usable. By no means will they be printable right after scanning. However, there are a few free apps that you can use on your phone: 3dscanexpert.com/3-free-3d-scanning-apps/Might be worth a try. Note that I am by no means experienced with them, however I have seen people use them and unfortunately it seemed quite cumbersome.
