Hello,
I come in search of assistance. I am looking at getting my husband some stuff for his birthday and I have no idea what I am looking at. He has been talking about flock and something about static grass? Like I said, I have no idea where to even start to look for this stuff or what to even get. I want to surprise him with this so I can't really ask him specifics. I was just wondering if you had any advice for me? I am looking for flock and the static grass thing as well. I am in Canada and I have a budget of $150 CAD. Is there a starter kit or something like that? He doesn't have anything at the moment and I would like to get him enough to get started. Thanks so much in advance.

My opinion, try the woodland scenics brand. Not a bunch in this kit, but it has a little of everything. link
This is the larger version of just the "flock" flock
And this has a nice variety of grass. grass
That should get you familiar with what he's talking about. I use Amazon, but you can find this on eBay or any hobby store online. Good luck.

If your husband really wants static grass, and it sounds as though he does, you will need to save some of your budget for a gadget to provide the static charge as the grass is attached. Here's a site with a relatively inexpensive applicator - you can poke around on the internet and look for other options, too. www.micromark.com/economy-static-grass-applicator-by-grass-tech-usa,10399.html The bit after the comma is part of the URL - you may have to copy and paste it to get it to work Extensive variety of static grass here www.sceneryexpress.com/Static-Grass-Material/products/1230/but you should probably pick just one from any one of the standard scenery dealers

If you like to craft you can also build a static grass applicator yourself, exactly like the one margaret showed. It's quite easy and lots cheaper, since they're made from an electric fly swatter and a strainer. I built one myself for about 4 EUR, it works perfectly. This tutorial shows you exactly how to do it: Here's another tutorial that shows you how to make a more advanced static grass applicator. It's more expensive (about $35 if I remember correctly), but if you use it often I guess this is probably the way to go: You could also buy something like this, e.g. here: www.grasstechusa.com/GrassTechTwo but again it's a lot more expensive. The easiest option would be to buy a static grass puffer bottle, something like this: www.modelscenerysupplies.co.uk/scatter-flock-ground-cover-trees-and-bushes/grass-tufts/puffer-bottle-static-grass-applicator-08100. I've never used one myself, but from what I read it should work decently, though large surfaces can take a long time.

Thanks for posting those suggestions, fantascientist. I am all for DIY as much as you can, but if it's a gift she wants her husband to be able to use right out of the bottle, so to speak, then a pre-assembled version is an easier choice. But she knows her husband and now she has more info to base her decision on.

So i went through it and found with shipping and conversion to CAD i can get him the applicator and 5 1 quart shakers. Does anyone have any suggestions as to which 5 would be a good start? Thanks again for all the help. I truly appreciate it!

I recommend that you wait until one of the folks who does more wargame terrain than I do posts a suggestion for you.
But if you can't wait that long, you might consider getting Light Green Static Grass and then either the Burnt Grass Static Grass or the Harvest Gold Static Grass to provide some contrast or represent a late summer grassland. And then for your other 3 slots: Coarse Medium Green Turf, Blended Green Turf, and Blended Earth. If your husband uses regular sand for brown earth, then just get another green foam flock instead of the Blended Earth - one that will provide some contrast with your other selections.
Again, there are others who post here regularly who have much more terrain experience than I do, and their advice is worth waiting for if you have the time.
