I used some slightly-larger-than-horses Triceratops as mounts for Goblin Ultra-Heavy Cavalry (equal to Knights in Plate Mail, riding plate-barded horses), for mass battle games -- not 'plausible', but fun anyway. Goblins tend to be very weak, as an army, so this beefed them up just a bit. And it is quite fun to put out on table... I had some Goblin Wolf Rider figures (Prince August Fantasy Mold set), which seated perfectly behind the head-shields of the dino's.
I also found some bats, large enough to use as cavalry, for Goblins. I used them in a mass battle game, and they really were fun to see swarming over Human units (the Goblins were armed with Molotov cocktails...). Again, it beefed up the Goblin army some, which they desperately needed. These could be used in smaller numbers, for an RPG encounter, to really challenge some mid-level PC's with 'wimpy' Goblins. Just a suggestion.
I also took some plastic Sabre-tooth Tigers, painted them up and based them, for use as "pets" for Hill Giants. The Sabre-tooth Tigers are quite a bit larger than a normal Tiger figure, so they make fantastic "pets" for the Hill Giants, and it adds some pizazz to the Hill Giant encounters for my players. There are numerous ways to use non-standard figures. Let yourself go a bit, and try to think outside the box. You may come up with something fun, and exciting. Then you can come back here and share it with the rest of us... Cheers!
