Been playing D&D for almost 30 years now. Started in 85 with Mentzer Basic. I mostly DM'd over the years and in 95 I was in college and stopped playing. Several false starts over the years kept me from playing or DMing again until last summer. My old group from high school is actually back together again and since November I have been back to DMing. We play a mix of 1st and 2nd editions. We have always used minis and we have a couple Chessex Mega mats that we use but lately, with a group of 6-8 players I am finding it a big hassle getting around the table to draw out the map as they explore. I was looking for some new ideas and I happened to stumble on DMsCraft on youtube and then ended up here last night. Fully inspired I decided to jump in head first this morning with a sheet of foam core I had laying around. I drew out a 1" x 1" grid and got to work. I am ready to try gridless and am going to drop it on my players this weekend and see how it goes. These are the pieces I have so far. I primed them back and sprayed them with a stone finish. I am not sure yet that I like the stone finish. I need to get my acrylics out and get painting though to finish them up. I am getting an idea of the basic pieces I need and then I will work on custom rooms. I know now I need more staight pieces, some hall endings, and definitely more rooms.

Looks like a good start to me. I always find that I need more hallway pieces. I have a couple round rooms and some oversized rooms too.

woo hoo welcome aboard! glad to see you jumped right in! good looking stuff so far! keep us posted. Aaaaand very cool you got back together with your original group! Man I wish! Any plans on trying out 5e ? just curious. I too grew up with basic/AD&D ( played all editions, 4th, not my thing.) My groups have switched from Pathfinder to 5e completely now. Super easy to convert modules from 1st to 5th if interested to do so. My group is older folks 40's. We love 5e. Cheers and welcome again.

I am always open to trying new things and I would try out 5th edition IF my players were open to it, but I just don't see it happening. I just introduced them to 2nd edition back in November!! I bought 3E, 3.5E and 4E books and they were just not my cup of tea. Too many rules bogging down the game imo. Ya never know but right now, I just don't see it. Also considering that all my players just went out and bought the 2E reprints I don't plan to ask them to buy more books anytime soon.

Hey as long as you getting together with great people rolling dice it truly doesn't matter what edition (or system) you play as long as everyone is having fun! I love basic/advanced 2nd and 5th. as long as I can play I'm there with my tin foil helmet and cardboard sword. woo hoo!

I took all the stuff from all the editions that I use and liked and built the rules around that. even added some Dragon Age RPG stuff to the game and seeing how that pans out once i can find some people to test run this new outcome. Also cool to see alot of people are still just playing 1st and 2nd editions
