A Tale of Woe
I met a young man recently who was compelled to share his recent experience. He said his name was Bartholomew Simpsonel the third, a knight of the first order. He said it was tale of woe. He said he was exploring a local cavern complex with two companions, Fred, a large brutish fellow and Barney a short fellow with unusually hairy feet. He said they had explored a large portion of the caves and dispatched a number of goblin-kin. They had not found much to compensate them for their efforts. Barney always seemed to be the first to find any treasure, but it was just a few coins. He related that they had found a strange blue beast, just before things went bad, very bad. He said the beast looked like some sort of draft animal, but had a very long snout. He said they thought the beast was hungry, because it sniffed at them and their packs repeatedly. They could not get it to eat anything they offered it, not oats, dried fruit, or nuts, not even venison jerky. He said it was about that time that things went bad, very bad. Barney's perpetual light lantern quit working suddenly. They had to light a torch so they could see to get out. He said they were well on the way when a large rock creature grabbed Fred and crushed him. He said he took several swings at the thing, but did little damage. He had to stop when the light was getting very dim - because Barney was running away with the torch. He had almost caught up with Barney when Barney dropped the torch. As he approached he saw that Barney was partially submerged is a clear quivering mass that blocked the path. He claimed to have hacked at the creature, but his sword sank into it with no effect. He said it shuddered forward swallowing Barney, cutting short his screams. Bartholomew recovered the torch and left the caves. He said the caves are cursed. He said things went bad, very bad. He also mentioned that his family sword started to show signs of rust, something that has not occurred for three generations. He then showed me artist renderings he had made by a local scribe named Kodak.

Bartholomew is a WotC 'Stalwart Paladin' mini with factory paint. The beast is a combination of two animals from a Jungle playset. The head and body is an ibex with its horns and some of its neck removed. The nose is from an elephant. The hump was molded with chewing gum. The paint job is not great, but works. My first 'homebrew' mini and my first time using glitter glue on a figure.

Fred is a re-based HeroClix 'Craven' mini with a toothpick spear and a light touch-up with yellow on his boots and mane cape. Rocky is made from a TP tube slit up the side and rolled into a rough cone shape, then covered with aluminum foil and hot glue. The arms are aluminum foil folded and rolled between the hands. The teeth are toothpicks. The eye is the top of a cheap chess set pawn.

Barney is a TSR metal 'Halfling with sling' mini from the NEW Dungeon
boxed set. I painted it about two decades ago. The cube was made using DM Scotty's video. The walls are 1 3/4 inch square. The corpse inside is a Twilight Creations zombie dabbed with a little paint. There is a toothpick spear also glued to another wall. It is open on the bottom and will sit down over figures.
The tiles in the background are from my first set. They were very economical. I had the tools and got the cardboard free at work. I ‘borrowed’ a marker from my grand-daughter’s art box. I used two 4 oz. bottles of school glue I had just got for $1. I doubled up the walls because some of the pieces I got from work were already roughly room shaped, with triple layers of double corrugated board. I had to make doorways and trim off some edges.
The tile the figures are standing on is from my second set. Not as economical and more 3D, but I like the effect. The base is double corrugated board with the edges covered with masking tape. I then tiled the bases with foam cut from rectangular foam plates. Individual tiles, cracks and texture are added with an ink pen. The walls are Styrofoam blocks cut from free bits and pieces from work and friends. I have used five different types of foam.
Stalagmites
The stalagmites are made from aluminum foil with some hot glue.
Dungeon Decor
The brazier is an inverted chess pawn with Q-tip flame. The pillar is 1/4th of a TP tube, wrapped around a lip balm tube, glued and seam covered with masking tape. The statue is a chess knight and a checker. The crystal ball is a marble and a plastic cap.
No real people or animals were injured in the production of this story. Not even the four legged basement beast that jumps on my crafting table and drags off things. It is bad, very bad. Thanks to everyone for your inspiration.
