Hi everyone! I think it's time for me to stop lurking and start participating.
First of all, a disclaimer: I've never seriously played tabletop roleplaying games, except for a brief stint with AD&D (1e) in high school in the early 80s. I got a copy of the Player's Manual and Monster Manual from my step-brother, but the boys wouldn't let me play. They said it was too weird. As if anyone who likes D&D isn't a bit weird! I had to content myself with reading Forgotten Realms books, designing campaigns that never got played, and occasionally playing Colossal Cave Adventure when my mom brought home an HP-85 from work (she worked at HP). XYZZY!
Fast forward to college, when I discovered MUDs and started building. I've been a involved with them off and on since about 1995 and have developed a lot of content for various MUDs. Now I'm done with that because the MUD scene is all dried up. My husband and I have also played through all of the Forgotten Realms CRPGs and we love them.
I'm an empty-nester now, and I need something to do! I'm an avid crafter and a decent writer. I love paper, fiber, and glass. I hope I can bring new ideas and techniques to the community because I've been sewing and crafting (and yes, quilting) for over 40 years.
I got the Wrath of Ashardalon board game a few weeks ago and have painted up most of the minis, which is something I've always wanted to do. I love it, and I want to take it to the next level. Tabletop with 2.5d is a perfect fit for my interests and skill set, and we're moving into a new house next week so I will have a nearly inexhaustible supply of cardboard. And a huge craft area!
We have three friends who are interested in playing, so that brings us to four players + me. We're all new, so it will be fun to stumble through it together. We've settled on 4e because most of the players we have are avid video gamers, and they will enjoy more focus on dungeon crawls and combat than on heavyweight story or roleplaying. I think I'm going to set our campaigns in the city of Skullport, and start with something based on DMG's Under the Tavern videos. (Which are very nice!)

Welcome @jahzi! It sounds like you will be a fine addition to our community. Be sure to thank DMScotty and the moderators for their hard work and dedication which makes this site possible.
While I hesitate to offer advice to people, if you are truly just starting out, I think 4e might not be your best choice. 4e is generally regarded as a mistake and Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast have gone back to pre-4e concepts and design with the new 5e version of the game. Besides, I just think Pathfinder is a better game than 4e. I would suggest that you look at Pathfinder or 5e. Pathfinder can be played for free if you want, the rules are published on Paizo.com and freely available for use. If you want to you can purchase the full rule books from Paizo as an electronic file for just a few dollars. The physical book is much more expensive. 4e, I'm afraid, is a bit of a dead-end game system now.
Hope to see some of your stuff here.

I would like to echo everyone else's congratulations on finding us and deciding to join! There are so many gifted and helpful people here, I hope that you find as much joy and inspiration as I have in coming here.
On a side note, I would just like to tell you how happy I am that you are finally getting to game after all those years. It is always wonderful to hear about new players falling in love with the wonderful thing that brought all of us here in the first place. But when that story begins as one of admiration from afar and a denial of inclusion... I cannot help but feel a small sense of vindication on your behalf. I have been playing for over half my life now and gaming is honestly, the best thing that ever happened to me (aside from my wife and son). It has brought me friendships that have endured for two decades and so many stories of epic triumphs and devastating critical failures. I sincerely mean this when I tell you that you have one hell of a ride ahead of you.

Welcome aboard. Nice to see a lot of us old farts getting into or back into playing. Being an old fart is a good thing, we survived those crazy years between being teenagers and being 30-something.
Always hard to give advice for gaming style and such. Everyone plays and GMs a bit different (which is a good thing). For what it's worth will throw in my two cents. I'd probably not want to start out with a long campaign to start with. Run some connected adventures before committing to a campaign. This way everyone gets their feet wet and everyone gets used to everyone else in the group. Have a few adventures that are sort of interconnected. Everyone gets used to everything and can see where they made a mistake or two. After a few adventures you can start the campaign in full force.
The transition time between the adventures and the campaign could be a nice way to either trash a character concept and start fresh or tweak a character that was OK but had one or two too many flaws.
Like I said just my two cents but seems like a good way to get back into gaming after many years and/or getting used to a new mechanic.
Never hesitate to ask a question. I've never seen anyone say "that's a stupid question" or flame anyone. There are a ton of people here at a ton of different experience levels of gaming and crafting. A lot of people here approach a single problem from different angles. A lot of times I'd used techniques from a few different people to come up with a solution taht works best for my own way of doing things.

Oh another thing, don't get discouraged. The first few tiles and such (like the purple worm) didn't turn out like how I wanted them. Most of us are our own worst critic. You make something and you know where all the little imperfections are. When that happens to me (I can't speak for anyone else but it must be true of others) the next project comes out better because the experience points but into the Crafting Skill.
And the whole thing is.... when you put it on the gaming table.... no body else is going to be looking at teh imperfections only you can see. Everyone else will be blown away by the cool factor.

Thanks for that, runningwolf. I am a terrible perfectionist when it comes to my own creations and definitely critical of them. I have made a few test tiles to try out some ideas and so far I'm encouraged, so that's good!

I have made a few test tiles to try out some ideas and so far I'm encouraged, so that's good! I am my own worst critic as well. I tend to make a prototype to see where I mess up at and then make something for the table.... But that's usually when I am trying some new technique or something I haven't done before. And never be afraid to ask for help here. I've asked some stupid questions and was never made to feel like an idiot. That's one of the reasons why the crafters here stand out from the crowd. ... but like I said even if it looks like hell in your own eyes I'd lay money down that the wow factor of using it will be in effect and no one else will notice that a painted line isn't exactly straight or that there was some color bleed or other minor flaw. That you took the time to make it, and it looks good on the table will be all that anyone cares about.

Wow exciting stuff jazhi! can't wait to see your stuff. can you post some pics of your minis? That would be cool! Cheers for now and welcome aboard. Yes 5e or pathfinder is the way to go. (I'm a d&d fanboy so I'm with 5e. I play pathfinder as well but both my groups are switching to 5e. Look them both over and go with whatever suits your tastes).
