Snagged this from my old room while visiting my mum this Christmas: It is some manner of hard resin. I am going to paint it up for my game. I have never painted a resin piece like this before, so I wanted to double check my plan against the assembled experience here to avoid bad paint adhesion. The plan: Right now I am soaking it in some warm soapy water Once it has soaked for a few hours I am going to go over it with a toothbrush to remove anything clinging to the surface. Once completely clean and dry I am going to cover it with Armor Black Primer Then Acrylic paint as normal. Anyone have anything to add / tips, or does this all seem more or less on point? Thanks

I might use some Gesso to get it ready to take some paint. Looks more like metal than resin.

I would probably refrain from spraying an unknown polymer. Some resin does perfectly well with spray paint solvents, some less so (it leaves the piece tacky, through paint, more or less permanently). I'm not a good enough chemist to say what reacts with what, although PVC really doesn't like tolulene. Any brush-on sealer will work, I'd probably go with a gesso because I have some and it works really well (also non-toxic), but polyurethane, latex, thinned white glue, or even Pledge floor polish (formerly Future, maybe Klear for the UK) will seal it and leave a paintable surface. This piece actually looks like it's already painted to look more like stone, so you could just paint over the current coat without a primer (although a base coat of white or black is certainly warranted). Primers are coatings, base coats are colors.
