I wanted to thank you all for your great ideas by posting the stuff I built so far.
As I said in my introductory thread, I recently started DMing the D&D5 starter pack campain. The people I play with are quite used to roleplaying (much more than I am), but I think my game was the first rolegame they played using minies and tactical battles.
I only DMed two games so far. The first one I was only using a draw-on battlemat and It came great but I was slightly disappointed by the way it flowed. Even if I think I came mainly from my non experience with DMing and the inexperience of the groupe with the system, I feel the game lacked something.
For the second session, I started crafting a tavern for the encounters. As you will see, the result is far from perfect, but when I pulled out the tile it clearly had a big wow factor. I also build a few measuring sticks in order to drop the grid and I think the combat flowed better.
I have a bit of experience in crafting terrains and painting miniatures as a wargamer, and I am not bad with crafting. Now I want to build as many things as possible in order to improve my games atmosphere and give my players the hook for tactical battles.
The first piece I build and the only one I showed to the player yet.
I was trying to represent wood, but the colors somewhat ended up looking like... crap.
A nice cavern with chiasm a two small bridges.
The work I have just finished, with DMG's shelves, a few nice boxes and my personal take on the beds. I think those look a bit more medieval to me and I made some of them so they can be stacked as bunk bed.
I mainly used balsa wood for the furniture. I love this material as it can be carved very easily and I find it a lot easier to work with than regular wood (like samba wood or craft sticks). I can be flimsy tough but like foamcore you can reinforce it with a PVA coat. (I just add some PVA in the paint I use for undercoating)
