kris , it sounds like you need to paint them, army-style... I do simple block painting, followed by The Dip, brushed on, not dunked. I'm an army painter, which is a rare thing, on these types of boards/communities. I average, seriously, around 10 minutes of actual brush time, per figure. Relax, they look fine, at arm's length.
I feel like I'm trying to sell ice to an Eskimo, here... If you wonder how well it works, how bad do they turn out, you will need to commit to a test figure.
Have no fear, plastic Army Men to the Rescue! Get at least one figure, paint it with acrylic craft paints, in basic, single colors -- simple block painting. Wait one hour for it to dry completely. Then, using a disposable paint brush (think, school paint brushes, 30 for $1 @ Wal-Mart), paint on a well-stirred small can of Minwax Polyshades Urethane Stain, Satin Finish -- not Gloss, Royal Walnut (dark, muddy brown color), or Tudor (black). For the first 10 minutes, watch for pooling, and remove it with the edge of a paper towel -- absorbs it handily. Then wait 3-4 days for it to fully cure. Spray with a matte clear coat.
If you like the results, you can paint 100 figures in about 100 minutes of brush time. That is 100 figures in about 1-1/2 hours. They won't win any contests, but they'll be fully painted, ready for the tabletop, record time. Basing is not factored into this example, as basing takes considerably more time. Go on... Sacrifice a plastic Army Man figure... You know you want to. Cheers!

Yeah, I've done the dipping technique in the past ...actually I blogged about it when I tried to get into 40K about 10 years ago: 101st4th.blogspot.com(the fact that I just looked this up and found out that it was 10 years ago scares me a little ). However, for D&D/RPG mini's, I do like to spend a bit more time on them - as I've already got a ton of the old pre-painted minis that I can just throw on the table when I need something quick ...so, as I say, when I do paint them I try to do an OK job.
That being said, I might try to speed-paint all the goblins that'll be arriving in the Reaper KS ...as there is a fair few of the little blighters

I've decided to split the next episode into two parts (rather than trying to cram too much information into one video) ...so here's the 'bones' part of the latest pdf:

Very impressive, kris ! I never would have imagined rib cages out of paper, could look so good! Cutting the ribs apart blew me away, then watching you bend the spine, to separate the ribs a bit... Crikey!!! The skulls, and bones, are really good models, as well. You continue to take paper crafting to a new level. Keep up the superb work! Cheers!

Thanks. While I'm not 100% happy with them, I think they've turned out quite nice - considering the materials used (and yeah, I don't intend to stop any time soon ...as I'm having way too much fun with this stuff ).

This is an underestimated game changer to tabletop terrain.
Dare I say it that you are the equivalent of DM Scotty, and BMCraft because you have a process and style that youve made your own.
A long way from paperhammer 40k for example.
Well done

Dare I say it that you are the equivalent of DM Scotty, and BMCraft... High praise indeed. I very much doubt that I'll ever reach even half their level of success/popularity, but as long as I'm still having fun making (and using) this stuff (and folks keep wanting to see more), I'll keep picking up the camera

Your technique for making hands on the spears, is amazing. I continue to be astounded by how you make so much, out of so few, and simple, textures. Really impressive, kris . Keep them coming, please! Cheers!

Thanks both. And yeah, the hand worked a lot better than I expected (it's probably the simplest part of the entire build ...and my favorite).

LOVE the ice terrain techniques! Simple, effective, and inexpensive... Perfect! Not a fan of red mushrooms -- too happy, too Smurfy (reminds me of Smurfette -- ugh!). The purple mushrooms are fantastic. Cheers!

Wow this is awesome! I second the comment above about the boulders in particular. That's not an idea I've seen anywhere else.

...Not a fan of red mushrooms -- too happy, too Smurfy... Yeah, the main reason I did them that colour is because, straight away, you can tell what they are (i.e. it's the classic 'look') ...but this alternative colour is probably better for our dungeons
However, you have now got me thinking about running an encounter with little blue-skinned villains (perhaps use 'red-caps' ...but change the colour of their headgear to white) lurking in a mushroom forest.

OK then, I'm not normally superstitious - but episode 13 has given me all manner of technical troubles ...but I got there in the end

I've also put this 'litttle' animated book swarm together using the open books (hot-glued to some pins - which have been inserted into a piece of foamcore that's been covered in one of my wood textures):
