Hello crafters! I am just starting out. I went to a cardboard box whole seller and picked up 3 4'x8'sheets of dual layer cardboard. So i have started to cut out the basic tile set out of the DMGinfo basic tile set video. I also happen to have several big sheets of that blue insulation foam board. I was thinking of using the foam board for the walls. Can anyone give any advice on this? Also just wanting to make sure my measurements are correct. I am doing 2.5" grids then using walls that are .25" wide. Anyways this is my first post and my first adventure into the craft so be kind Any advice would be great! Thank you all in advance.

Welcome to the boards nixcraft! It looks to me like you don't need much help, that's a really nice start. Just keep doing what you are doing and you'll be fine. I'm sure you probably already have, but if not you should review the crafting videos in the DM's Craft section on the home page. Dozens of great videos that will walk you through making everything from modular tiles to creating unique enounters with lava, rivers, trees... Looking forward to seeing more of your stuff.

Does anyone have any experience with that foam board insulation. Priming sculpting or painting. I had an experiment with priming it with spray primer and it ate into it.. Almost tempted to cut thicker strips for walls as the melted effect was kinda interesting and may look kinda cool once dry brushed.. Also I have seen people who use masking tape on the side of their tiles. would probably look nice but wondering if over time does it start to peel up?

When I use it for my terrain, I use a little bit of pva glue on the tape when I stick it. Seems to hold well after that. Welcome to the cult!

Okay! Looks good! I think your tiles could benefit from some highlighting on the edges and some dry brushing! The original 2.5 tiles had an edging of white on them. With his new system it seems that because the walls are higher and there are no more tiles! It doesn't seem a big deal! I think you should check out his Youtube channel! He does some awesome stuff and I think it will bring you to an even better place as far as ideas and inspiration.

Test Tile 1 done.. any thoughts or advice would be great. On the plus side, I would say they look great! Only drawbacks would be extra crafting time and more storage space required over the "standard" cardboard walls. Of course neither of these may be issues for you.

Storage is not an issue.. However I am starting to see a possible issue of doing traps witht he additional wall set up like DMGinfo does. So I am a bit concerned... If anyone has a solution for this that would be great.

use hooks like DMScotty did in his scythe blade trap video.
i would do the wall, i'd a hook like thing that would enable to put the trap where i want in the position i want. you use kaba skews to put them higher. or exchangeable kabab skews to put it over doors or none to put it on the floor. or put a hook like that just sit on the wall of the tile and then show the trap on its side. i think thats better because the trap itself becomes modular.

I am done with taping the basic set. So lessons learned do not use masking tape from the dollar store! I have noticed a few pieces starting to loose hold. I have run a glue stick along the edge of a few of those and did a paint test on a few of the others to see if once painted the paint might hold. If that fails I will do a watered down pva coat of the tiles to see if that works. I have picked up a few supplies to try some advanced flooring techniques. Should have some test tiles of those done over the next few days.

yeah masking tape doesn'T work much for me too. i used large ones and it still doesn't hold at all. some of my tiles are starting to lose it.
if you need PVA glue to hold it there, you might as well start glueing the cardstock on the sides instead.

Yea.. However I may line the entire underside with a magnetic sheeting or felt (probably felt with a felt lined table) and the sides would be covered at least 25%-100% by the side walls. So we shall see.

Welcome to the craft!
Painting foam with spray paint is possible, if you keep the can far enough away from the foam the foam will not melt. The distance I have seen written on the side of spray cans is 18 inches. I try to keep the can at least that far away when I'm painting foam and my foam does not melt!
You could also make a mix of white glue and water, 50/50 and brush it on before you spray paint the foam and it will create a layer on the foam that will reduce/keep the paint from hitting the foam directly.

So I am working on test tile 2 with an advanced floor tile made from a fast food drink carrier. I dont know if I am liking the effect vs how much extra work... thoughts? Debating wether or not to just scrap this and go back to the original.. Just dont know how long it would take for each tile with the spray painting textures and cutting and gluing of each tile. I think the foam style walls may add enough flavor. Any Advice would be great!

So I decided to try a more advanced tile as I have an abundant source of foam. Here is my second test tile. Thinking of using all the card board from the basic dmginfo set to provide a solid base to glue these tile to. Any thoughts or advice is welcome.
