My painting area has been so cluttered recently that it has been deterring me from painting my mounds of 28mm figures. So yesterday I set out to remedy that problem. I found a load of unused Styrofoam in my garage and returned it to my lair. I then assembled it into the desired shape, cutting with a bread knife, gluing with liquid nails and further securing with wood nails. I also checked for levelness using my iphone. I then began black priming by hand. I left it to dry for an hour in my hideously yellow painted lair. Next I sprayed it down with a grey stone textured spray paint and let dry over night. And here is the finished product. Cheap and utilitarian. I wont be putting any craft paint on the shelve because of weight, it seems sturdy but only time will tell. Not bad for some trash I had in my garage. I may spice it up a bit with some craft jewels or give it some nice grimdark skulls in the future.

That's a beautiful shelf, @danceswithhippos! Very creative. Unfortunately, I have very little wall space to mount such a piece and I can't really afford to buy the stone texture paint. However, I shall keep this in mind should my circumstances change for the better. wilmanric, that's a great idea. Currently I have my paints crammed into a shoe box sized plastic container that I would rather use for other things. Something like this will help me organize my limited shelf space (which it sorely needs). My local post office is a block and a half away from me, I wonder if their boxes will do? What size did you use?

All of mine is craft paint so although the styrofoam probably wouldn't hold up I'm definitely planning on trying the cardboard variation.

I wont be putting any craft paint on the shelve because of weight, it seems sturdy but only time will tell. Looks great! To keep the shelves from sagging under the weight of paints, you could try pushing a couple barbecue skewers through each shelf from the side. Might want to practice on scrap first though, since you've already painted and glued.

I built the second one and painted them both black. They look pretty good and they function beautifully. Thank you so much for the idea! It was perfect timing, as I really needed something to hold my paints in an easy-to-get-to manner that would save space at the same time. If I get time (getting ready for a game on Sun), I'll post pics of the finished shelves in service tomorrow, but more likely it will be Monday.

All of these are great ideas and an inspirational use of common materials for what amounts to a permanent purpose.
I am in the process of moving my game room from my basement to an upstairs bedroom no longer being used as a bedroom. The down side is that I am losing my game room, so we'll either have to game in the front room or kitchen, neither of which is ideal, or else game at someone else's house.
But the potentially good news is that I can shape this room to be whatever I want it to be, if I have the energy, creativity and materials to do so. Well, I have the materials, I've got tons of cardboard, styrene, foam core posterboard, even scraps of wood if I need them. I tend to think of using this material in some upcoming game-related object, but this is making me think that a better use of the materials might be to make my crafting/writing/home office area as effective and efficient as possible. I've always had issues with organizing my game materials, it's all over the place. I've got boxes and bags of everything from wooden dowels to lichen and moss. Up until now they've just been sort of stacked around my crafting area in a haphazard manner with stuff jammed into empty cardboard boxes or plastic containers or wooden desk accessories.
I had never really considered these materials to be strong enough for any sort of permanent storage, but seeing this, I have to wonder why not? I've got game items made out of this stuff that has lasted for years already, some of which has endured pretty significant game play, and it still looks more or less the same as it originally did. Why not use it to create a crafting dashboard of sorts which arranges all my paints, brushes, scissors, razors, files, sculpting tools, loose crafting materials, etc?
To really do that justice would take a lot of thought and planning though. But so what, so does making a poster board mansion, keep or riverboat.
Hmm.... Time to get the tape measure out perhaps....

You're not alone in your quest for organization. You should see my little (& I do not use the word'little'lightly, here) craft/office area. I have a small corner of the kitchen where a breakfast nook would go. It's quite a squeeze, and something of a disaster at the moment.
Perhaps, we should start a thread for the purpose of helping us poor scatter-brained & disorganized crafters bring some light and sanity to our spaces! What do you think?

dungeonmistress, I think a thread focused on organizing crafting spaces would be excellent. This probably comes up now and again and maybe a forum section on the subject could even be helpful.

Forum section focused on organizing your crafting spaces, good idea! What do you think, DMScotty? I know I could use all the help I can get in that direction!
