first , the beholders and their kin . i have always thought that beholderss more than any other monster were icons of the D&D world , because they were so different than anyother monster , and were mainly only found in D&D . dragons and the like could be found in a pretty much EVERY fantasy world , but beholders are to fantasy what the DALEKS are to scifi . and i always thought beholders would be happy most of the time , smug in the knowing thatthey are the most pwerful beings in the universe and are the most perfect form and image of life .........................( atleast in their own minds ) i sculted these 8 or so years ago , and still have them on my shelf , refusing to let them go durrng spring games cleaning . <img src=" " alt="" style="max-width:100%;"> <img src=" " alt="" style="max-width:100%;"> <img src=" " alt="" style="max-width:100%;"> <img src=" " alt="" style="max-width:100%;"> <img src=" " alt="" style="max-width:100%;"> <img src=" " alt="" style="max-width:100%;"> <img src=" " alt="" style="max-width:100%;"> this is one of many gauths i made , this particular one was always my favorite of the batch . <img src=" " alt="" style="max-width:100%;"> what kind of beholder builder would i be without making a gouger to keep them all in line ? <img src=" " alt="" style="max-width:100%;"> this is one of my halffiend beholders , because a REGULAR beholder isnt bad enough ?!?!?! <img src=" " alt="" style="max-width:100%;"> this was actually the first beholder i ever made , and while i like him , it was a learning process <img src=" " alt="" style="max-width:100%;"> another of my halffiend beholders , arent templates WONDERFUL ?!?!?! <img src=" " alt="" style="max-width:100%;"> when i was sculpting these , 3.0/3.5 was current , and with the open license there were tons of companies making supplements . one such bestiary had a template for spellwarped creatures where they had been magicaly altered or combined with another creature , in this case a pig and beholder . i always had a special place in my collection for this guy , sure he is half pigish , but he still holds no less the fury and indignation that every other pureblood beholder exudes . and FYI , his favorite food is myconids , which he can smell from miles away ! .......... oOHHH so many potential scenarios center around this guy <img src=" " alt="" style="max-width:100%;"> another spell warped beholder , this time mixed with a spider , as an ultimate creation , warped by the drow to destroy their enemies .......... to bad its almost impossible to control a beholder lest he destroy the hand that feeds <img src=" " alt="" style="max-width:100%;"> another spellwarped beholder , this time mixed with serpent essence , his bite is almost as deadly as his gaze ! <img src=" " alt="" style="max-width:100%;"> and of course an eye of the deep !

These are fantastic. I especially love the spellwarped spider-beholder. Scary as hell.
Heh, the first one makes me think: if beholders had a game show (like "Who Wants to be a Tyrant Overlord?"), this guy would be the host!

thanks . the first one i did was a learning experiance , his eye stalks are hard to do because i used wire and covered it in "greenstuff" , which was dificult to work with in that manner , all the rest (except for the ravenloft beholder and the eye of the deep ): the eyestalks are JUST green stuff sculpted , with small beads at the ends for the eyes . the first one and the mage are also the only ones i made the teeth seperatly for , all the rest i painted/drew the teeth in because it was much faster and easier to get them smaller that way . the center of each beholder is a wooden ball i got in the woodsies section of hobby lobby ; with the exception of the first beholder i made , ALL the other beholders on kin , their big main eye is actually painted on the surface of the wooden ball insaide them and as for the spell warped spider beholder , i always think of him floating along the cave ceiling , stalking like a floating spider amongst the massive webs he weaves

and here are some MAGEKNIGHT figures i did . because mageknight alowed you to mix and match your armies factions at your own whim , i bought some of the large based figs , and took the figs off their bases and replaced them with my own figures to match the faction of the army they would be in . <img style="max-width: 100%;" alt="i replaced the bull with the modded golum " src=' '> <img style="max-width: 100%;" alt="this one was a mixture of zoid kits " src=' '> <img style="max-width: 100%;" alt="zoid kits , golums , woodsies , plastic bits galore " src=' '> <img style="max-width: 100%;" alt="the arms are a hodge podge of bits , but the center ball is actually a plastic christmas ornament that i added stuff onto to turn it into a golum construct " src=' '> <img style="max-width: 100%;" alt="THIS one is mostly me . all the round shpyrical segments are wooden balls , the arms are wooden dowels with more wood balls for segments , all joined and decorated with greenstuff " src=' '> </a>'> <img style="max-width: 100%;" alt="all the round sections are wooden balls joined together to build my dwarven roto-steam dragon " src=' '> </a>'> </a>'> <img style="max-width: 100%;" alt="zoid bits , bionical bits , and TONS of greenstuff " src=' '> </a>'> </a>'> <img style="max-width: 100%;" alt="zoids bits and greenstuff " src=' '> </a>'> </a>'> <img style="max-width: 100%;" alt="more zoid parts , more greenstuff , and more wooden balls " src=' '> </a>'> <img style="max-width: 100%;" alt="zoid parts , greenstuff , and wooden balls for the necks" src=' '> </a>'> <img style="max-width: 100%;" alt="more zoid parts , green stuff , and wooden balls " src=' '> </a>'> <img style="max-width: 100%;" alt="a ton of golum parts , green stuff , and more woodenballs " src=' '> </a>'> <img style="max-width: 100%;" alt="i wanted a golum catapault , yes , more wooden balls and detail bits from the hobbylobby " src=' '> </a>'> <img style="max-width: 100%;" alt="my atlanstis guild battering ram " src=' '> </a>'>

I'm floored. Utterly, totally floored. Your beholders are pure, wicked evil genius. We had a few beholders here and I did one myself (one of the projects I procrastinated for months because I felt it was too complex, even if it wasn't in the end), so I know how hard they are and have seen quite some different ideas how to make them. But your's are setting the bar two or three notches higher in my opinion. Not only are they masterfully crafted, they also have a 'soul', so to speak: They almost look like real beings, not like miniatures. No two eyes are painted the same. And each concept is different from the others. Wow. And then your warforged... Wow again. You did a great job working with somple shapes (balls) and combining them with filigrane bits and pieces, creating an illusion of complexity that probably vanishes only when you look at them really hard. Great job again. I'll save all of those pictures for later inspiration. *rubs hands*

If you haven't considered 'SF/F miniature sculpting' as a line of work... You should. Very professional. Thanks for sharing. Cheers!

thanx guys .
bythe end of my beholdere phase ......well , its not fully over yet , .......i dont think it will ever be fully over ......i could get a basicbeholder sculpted in about 10 minutes . the gauths are harder because they are smaller , and getting them all in proportion is a little harder .
and while i did like sculpting the figs , i am nowhere near good enough to do it as a job , and my current job leavs my hands to sore to really do it much anymore .
i reached my limit of photobucket hosting (free account) but i will post more pics when i get the time to post them on dakka dakka

some more D&D pics of the warforged greens , aswell as a iron clad mauler . the mauler was actually a bear figure that i added green stuff to to turn it from a small toy into a beast of war !!! and the mounted paladin/warrior , the green with the sword in the pics with him was an unmounted version of the same fig . <img style="max-width: 100%;" alt="" src=" "> <img style="max-width: 100%;" alt="" src=" "> <img style="max-width: 100%;" alt="" src=" "> <img style="max-width: 100%;" alt="" src=" "> <img style="max-width: 100%;" alt="" src=" "> <img style="max-width: 100%;" alt="" src=" "> <img style="max-width: 100%;" alt="" src=" "> <img style="max-width: 100%;" alt="" src=" "> <img style="max-width: 100%;" alt="" src=" ">

thanks . sometimes when i am gaming , i run into a young wargamer , there is always one , they make horrible looking conversions of lots of figs , painting stuff that looks like it was done by someone that was colorblind AND having a siezure at the same time they were modding the fig , and i just try to overlook the fig , because THAT was what MY stuff looked like when i first got into gaming . to produce stuff like this ..................oh the figures i ruined all those years ago

The 80's really were the best era for toys, IMO. I feel so bad for today's kids when I walk down the toy aisles and see their options lol. Everything's chunky and cartoony now.

Yeah I find myself looking at all the toys and wonder who taught these guys per portions. Huge head, big arms, little legs, and huge feet.
