I used DM Scotty's tree method for the trunk and hot glue and floral wire for the branches.

When I made my giant trees, I balanced them by going out in my backyard and finding some good-sized rocks. Each one was just small enough to shove up the hole of my toilet paper / paper towel tubes. I just shoved them in and used plenty of hot-glue to keep them in place, then I glued a thin cardboard "cap" to both seal in the rock, and to provide a flat base for the tree.
