Basepainted... ...and washed. Crappy neon light gets the colors a bit wrong, but I'll take a daylight shot when finished. The eyestalk will get the stone treating so it looks like the single stalk I made (and purple one on the left will get stoned as well) am i the only one noticing he changed back from the butt tentacles to the butt spikes as it was supposed to ? thought you said they looked weird, why did you change back to them ? i do think its better this way though. from this point of view... seriously, thats one monster i dont ever want to meet. pretty darn sur it goes toe to toe with a tarrasque ! The butt spikes (i.e. similar to the roriginal sculpt) didn't work, so the butt tentacles are the current plan.

Re-painted the eyestalk and the stones inserted in the flesh of the back. I'm still mighty proud of the angled magnet base: It allows this critter to hae a very dynamic pose when I introduce it on the battlefield - it erupts from the ground and the base keeps it in that 'flying' state for the first round of battle. Afterwards I can just but it flat on the table, and the base can be used for other purposes. Ideally I'd have that base already on the table, with some harmless dungeon deco on it so the players won't get suspicious - nothing gives an ambush away like an empty magnetic base! *g* I still have to do the central eye, but haven't decided yet what to do with it. I could copy the green-and-yellow fron the eyestalk (=boring!) or I could do some other weird scheme. Ideas, anyone?I want to toy with painting the various pustules so that they stand out more - keeping the whole body as is wouldn't do this monster justice. But again, I've run out of ideas. Guess I have to do some Nurgle research... Any ideas, pictures and links are welcome!
...and then there's the question about how to paint the tentacles. Here's a dark purple scheme that I tried, but I'm not sure it really fits with the flesh colors. What's your opinion? Any better ideas? with flashlight

OMG if you put that down on the table in front of me...I would get up and rum out of your place...uh, run, **hiccup**
seriously, you have a fantastic knack for creating creatures that nightmares are made of, simply awesome
your magnetic leaping beastie is so awesome, I choose not to try to steer you by suggestion, you'll get it, I have faith, lolz and **hiccup**
perhaps just using different shades of what you already have, will give you the look u wish
again, ridiculously horrendous monsters of nightmarish gaming master creators goes to you sir...EXALT ! (in the words of Kev!)

No tentacled monster for several months... high time to get those appendages flailing again! I have two experimentally painted brains on my desk * for so long their dust layers would be of interest to archeologists. I decided to make a Grell, one of those weird abberations living in the underdark but hailing from the-gods-know-where, a.k.a. the Far Realm. * Man, does that sound wrong...The large one was made with an brain-shaped ice tray, the smaller one is a walnut shell. I recently collected a dozen new walnut shells whose texture looks much more brain-like, but this one was so long on my to-do list (and has already some work invested) that I couldn't bring it over my heart to chose the newer ones. Anyways, I started out with the large ice-tray brain one but quickly realized that I don't have the right tentacles in my stock *. * Yes, I do have tentacles stocked. This shouldn't be a shock to anybody - premade greenstuff/milliput tentacles come in handy more often than you (care to) think, and having to wait for hours for them to harden kills the flow. Having a box of different sizes and shapes is the way to go. The official illustrations all show the Grell with long and slender tentacles, and lots of them: Btw: I kicked the tentacle barbs/thorns/stings out because they never made sense to me visually. Incidentally, that saves me a lot of detail work. So I decided to use the walnut instead, even if the brain-texture of the one I had lying around prepainted wasn't as great as the ones I collected recently. I made the beak out of electrical wire insulation, the metal scrap is a broken.off piece of my craft knife. I want the creature to fly on a magnetic fly stand but also to be able to stand on it's tentacle tips because in the game, it is quite probable that the players find ways to get it down to earth. I wanted the flying pose to be very dynamic, i.e. looking like the creature comes flying at high speed towards it's enemies. That would mean to let the tantacles fly backward - which would not be compatible with the requirement of the beast being able to stand on them... By sheer luck (or serendipity, if you like) I attached the tentacles in a way that makes both possible. The key was to place the metal both outside the center on the underside and at an angle (I glued a second metal piece over the first when I realized that). A peak below the beast's skirts. Pretty crowded down there. Too much ...stuff dangling if you ask me! I added a few more tentacles and blended the beak in. I'm pretty happy with it so far. The posture is exactly what I wanted and even better . No on to painting that thing!

A peak below the beast's skirts. Pretty crowded down there. Too much ...stuff dangling if you ask me! Taken out of context, that is a very, very wrong sentence I love this look. Really cool shape coming out. I wonder what it would look like if you took two walnut shells and cut off about a 1/4 or even a 1/3 of them and attached them to make that seam line down the middle that the grell is always sporting. Definitely would not want to mess with something that looked like what was flying down on me.

You just gave me something to do with my dremel... and I'll need to roll a bunch o' tentacles.

Two experimental pieces: One with ogrestamp's idea in mind and one with holes dremel'ed in - so I can stick tentacles in and still have an intact underside. ...plus: a few more tentacles: Took me two thirds of a milliput box and about 45 min from start to finish. I really love this material, it is sooo much easier to work with than greenstuff, and cheaper as well!

Looks cool so far. One aesthetic point I would make. Either take that dremelled piece and take a rim off the edge to lessen the curvature of the walnut shell, or make more hole along the side and hang, or drape, a few tentacles on the sides to mask the curvature of the shell. That way it doesn't look like a walnut so much when you glue the pieces together.
Now I want walnuts. I want to craft with them and plus, I'm getting hungry.

Good advice!
I was toying with the idea of incorporating the rim into the creature's design, a) because I didn't have an idea how to remove it and b) because that rim looks organic. But I'll try to remove/lessen or hide it with tentacles on one nut to see how it works out.

Personally I would have used cardstock to mask the bottom...
But looking forward to seeing how the dremeled nutshell works out.

Here's the dremel Grell WIP: Placing the tentacles is the most important aspect. It absolutely pays to take your time and not rush this step! Only with the right configuration you'll get what you want these beasties to look like.

UBERCOOL STUFF, tauster! You are a FINE source of WONDERFULLY imaginative ideas & inspiring creations. I REALLY like the Grell. Since I live in a pecan grove, I'll have to try a Pecan Grell; the lack of convolutions would make it either a Autistic Savant Grell or the Dread Trump Grell. FANTASTIC WORK!

Battle of the nut grells. I like it. A hazel grell would just look silly, I think.

Hey everyone, Tauster is dremeling his nuts!
Okay, now that that's out of my system...
Looking good. Might try this myself.
I wonder if I can use super sculpey to make some tentacles?

Some of the tentacles I made recently were much too large for the walnut Grell, but I still had this brain from the ice moulds around... ...so here's the boss of the Grell! Grell upskirt shot. I made a kind of hotglue tunnel to hide the metal scrap. Beaks made out of electric wire insulation (cable diameter approx. 15 mm). These proved too large, so I had to trim the bases on the wide sides a bit. ...yes, looks sufficiently imposing. My players will love to hate it.

Remember that white-out mouse I posted a while back? The one I wanted to use as robotic/cybernetic wings? Well scrap the wings, I got another idea for that! I hotglued some metal on, at the bottom for the magnet of the fly stand, and in places I want to attach something later on. I attached another metal surface for the fly stand with a different angle, so that this beastie has two lefitation modes: Flying forward and attacking downward (pics follow below). I also added lots of arganic-looking hotglue texture. This critter will have mechanic and organic components. I also made a modular tentacle bush*. It is magnetic, so I can attach it to different creatures in the future, or use it as spellmarker. And yes, I continued on one of the grells - what you see there is the first layer of white primer. *...hey, is that a new word? *g*Attacking downward posture: Fly forward posture, i.e. more or less horizontally: That's where I stand it the moment. I'm running out of creative momentum, and that's usually the best time to take a break. One of the sides has a deep circular hole in it, and I haven't decided yet how to utilize that... I briefly toyed with the idea of inserting an LED, but it is too small for that and I don't want a bulky add-on on one side. Perhaps I simply glue a magnet or some scrap metal for more magnetic gimmicks...

That's pretty cool, Tauster. Reminds me of a kraken or a giant squid. Or a some sort of a cyborg gone horribly wrong.
