Hey there,
I am in Asia and a long time on and off rpger. I was very firmly in the theatre of the mind camp and rather againt minis/maps and whatnot until the Bones Kickstarter. Now I have both sets of Bones, two sets of DF Dungeon Tiles plus stretch I got in a trade, put $325 into the second DF KS (five sets), and have just spent a good deal on bulk cheap minis. I will be picking up the minis when I visit stateside next week. I was mostly pleased with the minis I had from the Bones KS sans giants, StgSlag's post on his blog about substitute giants put me on a trail of acquiring much minis. I blame him for my recent expenditures .
That being said I am thrilled about finding this place. At the moment I am not into using cardboard for humidity and longevity reasons but this may or may not change. Alternative materials have proven to me most useful- knockoff Model Magic, Hot glue casting, and PVA/Tissue are all great, cheap and easy. PVA/Tissue and MM are tricky when trying to reach tolerances over here due to humidity issues, but I suppose they can be modified after they have dried if needed.
Below find some pics of the crafts I have made over the past week or so:
Rubble from PVA/T and also spronge + PVA:
~2" tiles from PVA/T -they took forever to dry and due to having to move them around and the time, things did not end exceptionally well. With practice they could possibly be perfect 2" tiles:
4x4 tiles made of MM, that also took a bit to dry. I used a frame of DF tiles and then impressed tiles upon the MM. I think it is also a durable solution, but they need a little work to get "on spec.":
Various natural shapes and impressions made with MM (a great material for organic shapes!) and hot glue casting:
A supersecret oogoo proejct:
Cheers!
