Hello there!
First time poster but I have to say I love the work on here. I will post properly in the new member forum, but I'd like to share this first. Cardboard and plaster are very popular in the DIY craft community, but for various reasons I don't plan on utilizing them so I have looked into other materials (some other ones being PVA/tissue aka redneck micarta, and model magic-store and soon homemade). I hope to combine these with my small but soon to be growing Dwarven Forge Game Tiles collection. One material that is promising is hot glue casting aka redneck resin- I have not seen much on here about it, so I'd to share my proof of concept limited experiences.
First off, I learned that hot glue does not stick to silicone, and silicone is heat resistant. So, I went to the local Daiso (100 yen store, even though I may not be in JP) and picked up several silicone items to be used as molds. It cost be about 9 USD or so in total for these:
They don't look like much, but there is much potential locked in them:
As you can see some quick castings have produced some interesting items that are cheap and durable enough. Last night I scoured Amazon for cool silicone molds and I found other potential: Brains, human and vampire teeth, bullets, spikes, lego men, steampunks and lots of geometrical shapes. Woodland Scenics* and Hirst* molds could of course be also be used to great effect.
Another option is to cast in oil based clay. The hot glue will not stick. It may melt the oil a bit though, so this needs a bit more experimentation.
Thanks for the inspiration everyone! Many of the techniques on here have been real eye openers. I thought I'd share my own findings, IMO there is plenty of room in this field to play!
Cheers
*Not sure if they are heat resistant enough though, plus are they silicone?
