I finally finished(?) the prototype Guard Tower which I started around 4 December 2013... Here are some photo's of the first, of 12, Guard Towers: You can see some of my nearly-finished Hobgoblins manning the tower. The lichen surrounding the sharpened stakes at the base of the Tower, represent thorn bushes. This helps channel would-be attackers to the main entrance, making defense of the Tower easier. Only around two figures will fit inside most of the 12 Towers' tops (11 more in queue, 90% finished), but in mass battle games, each figure represents 10 men/creatures, so two figures translates into 20 creatures! For RPG's, having only two Guards up top, is reasonable, so it works for both applications. The Hobgoblin figures are actually Human Archers, from the Lionheart board game. In the 1st Ed. Monster Manual, Gygax described Hobgoblins as closely resembling Humans, in tactics, armor, and weapons, often being mistaken for Human allies when they marched onto the battlefield. He said it was only when they got closer, that their Human foes realized the truth. That gave me the idea of painting up a bunch of Human figures as Hobgoblins. At arm's length, they would be difficult to recognize the shape differences (pig snout) in the face, while the orange skin, and the blue nose, are a dead give-away. I will Dip them, matte coat, and then game with them, this Saturday. Just waiting for the orange paint to cure before finishing them up. Cheers!
