Try applying Minwax Polyshades Royal Walnut Urethane Stain (available from DIY stores, such as Lowe's, Home Depot, or hardware stores). It will both stain, and varnish/seal the wood. The Royal Walnut is a dark brown color. Apply it with school paint brushes, as they will be throw-away's when you are done, unless you wish to use mineral spirits to clean your brushes with. Set them on top of some Parchment Paper, to dry, as virtually nothing sticks to Parchment Paper (the urethane-stain WILL stick to wax paper -- been there, done that...). It may prove faster than painting, as it is a one-application-and-done 'paint' technique.
Also Google "The Dip", and "Magic Wash" techniques: simple block painting of figures, followed by either technique's wash application, then matte clear coat, and done. I can paint mini's with an average of less than 10 minutes of actual painting time, per figure, churning out lots of 20-50, at a time, doing it assembly-line style. I love painted mini's, but I don't exactly love the painting part. Cheers!

Another fast way to paint wood is the vinegar method. Soak a couple pieces of steel wool in a jar of white vinegar for a few days or more (it tends to get more potent up till about a week or two). Then you just brush it onto the wood, and after a few minutes, a chemical reaction occurs that colors the wood. It usually gives it a nice aged look and some good color variation, but it's a little unpredictable. I've gotten everything from a grayish brown to a redish sienna hue, but it is really fast and usually looks really good. I would experiment first though, since different types of wood seem to react a bit differently.

Wow great tips guys thanks, i will have to try each method and see how it all turns out. I like both ideas sgtslag and bloodchoke , as they seem to require little skill in painting which i dont have much of yet.

I was at hobby lobby and found a larger version of those barrels but unfortunately they did have any in scale.

I was at hobby lobby and found a larger version of those barrels but unfortunately they did have any in scale. Well thats unfortunate, but you could always call them barrel kegs full of mead or ale in your game for whenever your pc's decide they need to go to a tavern, or a dining hall. I was looking for a couple of those for that purpose myself, i wanted to glue a small plastic bit to the larger size barrel and make a single stand for it to go with the other one above!

A friend said if I wanted a nice wooden look to lightly seal it with clear satin medium and then stain it. Have not tried it yet.

Excellent rack! I would probably make a mold so I could cast copies. I would love to do that but i have no mold supplies at the moment! that's one of the reasons for me not painting it yet.

The rack looks fantastic.. great work!! I do love those barrels. I ended up carving mine out of stacked/glued popsicle sticks. That worked fine, but those are so much better.
