Last time we played our Mage used several spells that were cloud based. My brothers friend has these spell template to show the area of the spell, but you have to move the minis and set it down then put the minis back on top. I have some stiff solder so for tonight's session I am making rings that we can place down without having to move the minis. I'm sure this is not a new idea, but thought I would share

I will solder closed the ends and I left a piece sticking up for a handle.

Not a bad idea I'm needing a couple templates for the effect of a blunderbuss in my campaign I just may steal this idea lol.

I personally wouldn't solder the ends; I'd just use a very thin wire and twist the ends together so that I can open them later again. Of course if you use the same spell template again and again, you can just as well permanently close (ie. solder) them...
You can also use rubber bands. They have the advantage of not only being dirt cheap but coming in different sizes and colors. This is nothing new; Scotty even made a small vid a while back about using rubber bands...

if you wish to enhance the cloud spell effect, hot glue around the ring, and tap a cotton ball into the still hot glue and pull away, leaving cotton whisps. Stole this from the spider webs by theDMG? watching too many vid makers now... getting names confused..

If the effect is perfectly circular, then a paper clip molded to a circular shape (or solder wire) could work. However, if it is a variable effect, then you could use yarn tied with a slip knot effect, and as it expands, expand the knot to reflect the effect.

I like the slip knot idea! That would solve the" having to have multiple rings" issue!

As I think I have posted before, I use pipe cleaners for temporary spell markers and crafted ones for permanent ones. I have also gone to using coloured rubberbands for condition markers, ala DMScotty, instead of the bulky coloured pipe cleaners....
Great suggestion on using hot glue and cotton for some of the markers! Gonna add that too my list right after DMG's spiderwebs!

I like it! I've been trying to get just the right material to use for making spell templates, but so far, I haven't liked my results.

So far I am liking my pipe cleaners. I bought a pack of the glitzy colored ones. I plan on making some more fancy "crafted" ones, but for right now the pipe cleaners are doing the job very well.
