This puzzle is one I am working on for my current campaign that I am designing...I give a little background...skip the next paragraph to get straight to the puzzle
This one has an Item the PC's have that is needed to unlock this puzzle
The PC's have a Diary of an ancient, powerful Druid. It is given to them earlier in the quest by another Druid
The place they are in, is a Druids crypt (They had to go to a current monastery that was built upon an ancient monastery of the Druids, down through the catacombs to locate a way into the ancient Monastery basement...work their way through that to locate the ancient hidden crypt.)
In the diary (which is about 85% unreadable in a language not even the current owner understood) there is a page that deciphers Runes, and on another page there is a hierarchy of an ancient druid secret society.
The Head guy is known as the Elder, and there are subordinates of his known as arch druids & a couple of other subordinates like the keeper of the Druid Chronicles and the Druid treasurer. Under the Arch Druids there are subordinates known as high Druids and there are subordinates under those known as the Druid Counsel members.
The first room of the Crypt has the entrance and across from it stairway leading down...the stairway leads to a passage which takes the PC's to the puzzle room
The PC's should be about 3rd level when they get to this point in the campaign.
The puzzle is laid out as easily visible pressure plates of a circle surrounded by (8) triangles each with a rune in it
I plan to make this room...I have it laid out on Microsoft word (Below) using a marble background texture...I will print this, cut them out and glue them to thin card stock then glue them to a room made using DM Scotty's technique.
On the wall across from the entrance is a mural of a great tree, under is runes, deciphered reads: "Only the Elder shall pass"
So the Puzzle solution will be to enter the name of the elder that can be found the Druids Diary by stepping on the corresponding runes in the triangles.
For example if his name is Koot, then they would have to step on the Rune for K then the rune for O then O again and then T
If they step on any other, I have a huge stone slab that is about 10' above the entrance that will fall 2 feet for every wrong rune pressed...with the ancient intension of sealing in a would be grave robber.
Not to worry if the PC's are trapped by hitting the wrong plates too many times...in my crypt there just so happens to be a fire beetle lair...in fact, the commotion of the plate dropping the first two feet will bring a few of them out of the hole in the side wall to fight. They will have to work there way through the lair to move on in the dungeon.
If they succeed, a secret door will open on the side of the first room and they can proceed to the next room...which has a hole in the floor that is the other end of the fire beetle lair...so there is an easy way to get there(Solving the puzzle) or a much more difficult way (Through the beetle lair)
