So over on TMP (The Miniatures Page web magazine/forum), there was a question on USA sources for MDF bases, other than Litko. I buy mine off of Amazon.com, from various vendors. I use 25mm-square (single man-sized figures), 25mmx50mm (two man-sized mini's), and 25mmx75mm (three man-sized mini's) MDF bases for my fantasy army mini's (more mini's per base means fewer bases of mini's to move; different combo's allow me to make change when casualties need to be removed). I also use 50mm-squares of 3mm-thick plywood, for basing Giant figures, and of course, my plastic Army Men figures for games with them. i just ordered 100 x 50mm-square plywood bases, delivered for $11 (that's 11 Cents per base)! Hard to beat that price.
Litko is a company which specializes in laser-cutting different materials for its customers, particularly making bases out of MDF. Note that the bases I have purchased off of Amazon, are all laser cut, as well. I've done business with them in the past. I find less expensive options on Amazon. Thought I'd share with my fellow crafters. Litko is a great company, but I need to be frugal with my hobby stuff.
I always paint PVA Glue onto the tops of my bases, then I apply colored sand mixtures for texture. Been doing this basing technique for multiple years now (5+? 10+ years?). No warpage! I get no warping on either the MDF bases, nor the plywood bases. The Amazon vendors have multiple sizes on offer. Just try searching on your preferred size: 25mm square MDF, 50mm square MDF, 25mm x 50mm MDF, etc. If you need larger bases for bigger pieces, they have those, as well: 4" squares, 6" squares, etc. Search by your desired sizes. Note that you may see thin plywood in the results, as well. Both MDF and thin plywood, work equally well, at least up to 50mm-square. Cheers!
