Like most crafters, I'm always on the lookout for interesting and unusual crafting materials. I was in line at The Home Depot buying some topsoil for my lawn and I noticed a stack of Coconut Husk Basket Liners for $2 a piece. I immediately purchased one, unaware of what I would use it for. It just had one of those "I bet I could craft something out of that" vibes. I got home, placed it on a workbench in my garage, and I sat there for nearly two weeks. I had almost completely forgotten about it. So there I was, crafting another house for my town using all the standard techniques: Cardboard, Foamcore, Craft Sticks, Hot Glue, etc., and just about the time I usually consider Sepukku as a pleasant alternative to cutting and gluing hundreds of shingles to a roof, it hit me. "I bet that basket liner would be perfect for a thatched roof!" I cut out some pieces on the coconut husk basket liner and laid them out in the sun for a few hours, just to encourage any tiny critters to vacate the premises. I then soaked them in water and gave them a healthy coat of a PVA Glue/Water Mixture to seal them up and bind the little fibers together. When they were dry, I cut them to side and Hot glued them to the roof.
I really love the look of the thatched roofs and it really breaks up the monotony of all shingled homes (both in aesthetics and in the technique to create). I have created a few more thatched roofed homes.

I tend to prefer chopping up cheap towels for cheaper thatch...teddy bear fur is something I also really like the look of, but it tends to be more work there.

Looks great! Any other tips on where to get this stuff for cheap? Additionally, any ideas (pics) on how to 'weather' it darker, or giving it that straw silver look?
