I have decided that I am going to do an experiment in making minis with found and cheap materials. - No casting
- No expensive materials
- No modeling pastes or clays
- Cheap materials and tools
- Easy for anyone to do
I will post the results here and on my Facebook page. I have never made minis before, but I am sure I can pull it off. If the experiment is successful I will create a new video series to show how it is done.
By minis I mean characters, skeletons, goblins, etc...
Comments and suggestions welcome

Wow I am looking forward to your experiments. My sculpting ability is very elementary so i was soo glad to see no clays on your list. Keep us posted!

I love that idea. I can do some weird monsters, but weird means usually ' easy to sculpt/shape/craft' and/or ' near the shape of the original stuff it's made of'. So anything that teaches me how to du actual humanoid minis is highly welcome! I haven't done real humanoid miniatures so far, but if you look for something a bit weirder than characters, skeletons and goblins, check out what I did with my noodles. Erm... pasta, I mean. dmscraft.proboards.com/thread/98/flotsam-jetsamFlying Spaghetti MonstersThe eyes of the two-eyed ones are cones from lawson cypress, the 'cyclopses' eyes are shriveled acorns. Underdark fungoid emusThe skulls came from a cheap bracelets (less than 1$ for 40 skulls), the other materials were similarly cheap. Nest of wormsHaven't actually created this, but I think Asien fried noodles would make a great nest of worms. Break some of them off in various spaces and glue skulls on the resulting ends and it gets even more creepy. Plus, the whole worm-nest thing comes in a modular size...

Here is the first prototype of a skeleton. I am not happy with the sword, but I have a way of improving it. I wanted to do a skeleton first as they are the most difficult. The mini is larger than a standard mini, but small fine details are difficult at that scale. I intend to do more detailing on future minis - clothes, armour, weapons etc. I will try a few more soon. All my GW paints were nearly dry and had formed almost all skin (been about 10 years since I used them). I have to consider painting and what to use.\ The base is a standard size using a 3/8" washer (internal hole diameter).

tauster, those flat, pasta guys with the acorn eyes almost look like you could put a mini on them? The mini/character could catch a ride like a Disc of Tzeench? Is that the idea?

Flying Spaghetti MonstersThe eyes of the two-eyed ones are cones from lawson cypress, the 'cyclopses' eyes are shriveled acorns. These are just soo cool! I could soo see these also used as flying carpets!

I've become interested in making minis with homemade model magic. I'm impressed with the noodle monsters! Now I feel the need to raid my cupboard for monsters...

Its time for the all pasta dungeon. Lasanga sheets for floors and walls, roti pillars . . . GO!

tauster, those flat, pasta guys with the acorn eyes almost look like you could put a mini on them? The mini/character could catch a ride like a Disc of Tzeench? Is that the idea? You could place a mini on it, but a round base for a standard-sized miniature doesn't quite fit inside the wavey ripples, so it won't be standing there safely - and the flying bases don't exactly help. So yes, you could use them as flying mounts (I love that idea!!!) but it's a bit shaky. Moving them will definitely rewuire both hands or the mini will fall down. Its time for the all pasta dungeon. Lasanga sheets for floors and walls, roti pillars . . . GO! I had this thought before... Seriously, I have accumulated quite a number of pasta-based stuff. Apart from the monsters above, most is just 'dungeon decoration'. I won't probably ever get enough stuff together to make a pasta-only dungeon, but there's a lot more you can craft from it than most people ever imagined. ...OK, that's a given, because which sane person would ever think of making monsters from noodles? Or sawing pasta with a circular saw bench? *g* My players haven't seen most of what I've crafted in the past few months. I can't wait to see their faces with every new piece I'll be putting on the table! But joking aside for a moment: While I absolutely love all the weird shapes pasta comes in, and the cheap prices per piece, I still have some problems with the 'playing with food' aspect. I know I live in a modern land of plenty where food is ridiculously cheap (doens't mean that it healthy, but that's another story), but putting paint and glue on it still feels wrong. As long as I don't use tons of pasta for crafting, I try to tell myself that the small amount of food I'm using doesn't make a difference, but it's more a matter of principle. I think there's just no simple solution for this...
