In the process of building the first dungeon for my next campaign, I came up with an idea that I don't think I've seen before (which doesn't necessarily mean it hasn't been done, of course). I wanted to show you folks and get your thoughts. It's the classic "net drops from the ceiling onto your players' heads" trap. I started with some old kitchen twine, and since it was a bit too thick, I split the plies into two separate strings (they just twist back into new, thinner strands). Initially I tried knotting a bunch of short lengths into a net, but that got tiresome quickly, so I pulled out a crochet hook and made a quick mesh square. For the form, I squashed a piece of aluminum foil into the right shape with a hollow bit underneath. I covered it with parchment paper, and since tape and glue don't like to stick to either of these materials, I secured the parchment by adding a second piece of foil inside the first, sandwiching the ends. I soaked the net in water and squeezed it out, arranged it over the parchment form, and covered it in white glue. As of this photo, it had probably been drying for about 8 hours. Still wet, but solid enough to remove from the form and have it hold its shape. When it dries, it'll be painting time. Anyone have thoughts on what I might use for the weights that a net like this would have at the corners?

nice beginning and cannot wait to see the completed version. Maybe add small fishing weights to the ends that you asked for ideas...

Again, very impressive! I'd suggest using small rocks, pick them up from outside. Rocks are likely the weights the net-makers would use in the dungeon. Secondly, the rocks are for appearances only. The net will not require actual weights to hold it down...
Really looking forward to seeing this finished! Had to laugh, when I saw it, I thought immediately of the saying, "Trying to push a rope..." Cheers!

Cheers! Thank you! I ended up rolling out some Sculpey and cutting out little discs with a soda straw, then painting them to look like lead. Now all I need is for the second coat of glue on the net to finish drying, and I can paint and assemble.

Neat! yeah I have not seen a net trap on this form. Next pic can you have a mini(s) in the net and outside for scale? all giddy to see the final project.

Unfortunately my miniature collection consists of exactly 2 minis, which are still packed away somewhere from moving. I can give you a quarter and a popsicle stick for scale, though. And to show detail, even though the light in here is terrible for photos right now, and completely washed out the darker undercoat and dry brushing...

Thanks for the pictures that show scale. I hope you get a chance to increase your collection. You probably already know there are great tutorials on how to make paper minis and tokens as well.

Paper minis are awesome, great stuff out there, (okumarts, Kev's lounge, trash mob minis, one monk, to name a few. 3 of the 4 offer sets for free)

Great idea and execution. So many great ideas from everyone and so little time to try them myself. :-)

Looks like a good piece, I've been considering just getting some mesh netting and cutting it down though...probably wouldn't look as good, but it would be a lot easier for those less likely to spend the time to make one.

I guess I have a slight advantage there, in that I crochet. It didn't take that long to make the net square, actually, since it's so small.
