So, my DM scrapped his old campaign in favor of "tales from the Yawning Portal". He asked me, being the crafty guy I am, to make a well, which is the centerpiece of the inn and the entrance to the undermountain. I thought, what the hell, I'll just make the whole darn thing. This is obviously a WIP. The board is a 2'X2" piece of 1 inch thick foam that I had originally thought of using as a base. I have repurposed it. I will post pics as I complete this project. First up, the inspiration... Next, the WIP pics

Floor boards are done. Not going to put "walls" on it per se, but I am going to put stone supports around the outside, upon which I will place the second floor walkway and some blind doors.

wasn't saying to stay true tot he thing. was just wondering why the crane ? and no, all images that you see there is no crane. only stuff the characters added to support their ropes. the yawning portal is known for its pit. but its not known for helping people get down there. to the owner the pit is only there for show.
all that said, great work crane and all.

It looks real nice so far. Are those stone tile pieces on the pit walls? The crane was a good addition. A single beam across the pit or two across the edges would have worked too, I think. Gives adventurers somewhere to attach their climbing gear. A single beam may have blocked pit access.

Call it artistic license and be done with it. Does it really matter WHY he added a crane?

Looking good, The time spent on the flooring will pay off, I have been using a similar method for an Inn I'm building (much smaller floor space though).

Artistic license, but yes, in the pictures I've seen there are some with a crane and some without. To be honest, when the DM made this request, he asked me to build a "well". Only after, did I discover where this "well" was going. Get ready for more artistic license though, as I intend to create a psuedo second level/ Basically, I'm going to leave the walls off, build stone supports around the outside which will support an upper level balcony with blind doors. If we, the PCs, go through a door, the action will shift to one of my indoor tiles. This is primarily a set piece that I will probably sell after we are done with it, or use for the Conan Board game. I mostly just like building stuff like this. Its therapeutic for me since I have a pretty stressful job.

OK, I got curious and looked up the original description. You need the artistic license here, since the original description has the block-and-tackle pulley system hanging from a stone "lintel" among the roof beams, high above the well. Building even a section of roof to fit that description would get in the way of play. So a hoist arm system is the better choice for tabletop play. The so-called lintel isn't one, of course...

I "should" have some new pics to post by monday, if wife and kids allow me any time. Actually, my wife "sort of" likes my hobby. It's reletively cheap and doesnt involve booze or gambling....so I got that going for me, which is nice.

I have gotten sooo many great ideas from this site. I have also gotten great critiques. We shouldn't shy away from either. It all works together to make us better crafters.. By the way,I highly recommend Walmart for craft sticks. They have these awesome thin ones that have flat edges instead of the rounded popcicle variety. They are also, strangely enough, the perfect size to replace the cardboard in heroquest furniture. It turns pretty awesome stuff, the Heroquest furniture, into super awesome stuff. They are like 2.79 a bag and I usually buy all they have when I go in there.

I have been cutting off the rounded edges of my dollar store craft sticks (popsicle sticks) for a large project and it's starting to be a pain in the arse.

By the way what are the dimensions of your project if you don't mind me asking?

Not at all. The base is a 2'x2' sheet of pink insulation foam I bought pre cut. It's glued on a precut 2'x2' piece of mdf board. I got both at Home Depot. Originally, I had cut out 1"X1" tiles on it to use for another project.
