I recently made a beholder with techniques that I learned from DM Scotty, it was pretty cheap and didn't require any clay sculpting at all. I'd love to see his take on a beholder sometime. (The images are large, so I'm putting them in spoiler tags)
I made this out of some plastic baseballs I got from Dollar Tree, a glitter mixing tube I got from a craft store, a wooden disc, a metal washer, a dollar store baby buggy party favor, a variety of beads, and some sculpey and a lot of toilet paper and glue.
I covered the baseball in toilet paper and 50/50 glue and water mix. I used a cut in half toilet paper tube as a stand.
Then I built the eye. I made a ball of sculpey and put a hole not quite all the way through it. I took the discarded pieces from DM Scotty's wagon video, the hoods, and cut off the hinge part to make the eyelids. Then I hot-glued the eye piece onto the papier-mâchéd baseball. And then used the toilet paper and glue technique on the eye piece to blend them together.
I then took more toilet paper and glue and created a mouth shape, using my brush to dig out an area for gums.
Then I used DM Scotty's technique that he used for the Mimic, to make teeth for the beholder and hot glued them into place.
I made the eye stalks next, similar to how he made the Mutants, and started to glue them on.
I wasn't sure how I was going to do the eyes, so I black bombed it before I glued them on. I ended up spray painting the beads I settled on too.
Then I made the stand so I could paint it. The glitter mixing tube gave a nice hovering effect, I hot glued it onto a craft wooden disc with a flat washer and it seemed to work pretty well. I painted the based with a brush, because I didn't want to get paint on the tube.
Then I painted it. I'm not great at that, but it was pretty easy to make, just had to let the papier-mâché dry a lot.
I'm quite pleased with it myself, and I only ended up spending $3-5 total. I'd love to hear what others think.
Also, I'm sorry if this isn't it the right section. I'm new here.
