In several videos by DM Scotty and others, the foam board from Dollar Tree was recommended... I believe it was Readi-Board by Adams. It was recommended because of its easy peel paper and used to make that extra special detail for wood, stone and other textures.
I purchased 6 boards, cut out a bunch of pieces and I was ready to peel the paper.
To my suprise, the paper all tore. None of the pepper peeled off.
So, what now? Is there another way to get it off easier?
Is there another brand that's recommended?
...just a little disappointed after I did all that work :-(

A few thing you can try; 1) Try peeling it off in a rolling motion instead of just pulling it straight away from the board. 2) make sure the board is room temperature ( ie ~20°C ) 3) Try wetting the paper slightly before pulling it off ( use one of those spray things for flowers - mister?, vaporizer? ) 4) Try giving it a lick with a heat gun to melt the glue ( just be careful not to over do it and melt the foam aswell ) Depending on the foam type you may need to mix & match

That's odd, every piece of foamcore I've bought from Dollar Tree the paper has pealed off extremely easily. Question, I've noticed that the foamcore that has the easy peal paper is a little thinner than say the brand of Elmer's foamcore. Not much thinner, but it is a little thinner. I wonder if you managed to get the higher quality foamcore.
I agree with guppy as far as removal techniques but I have to warn you, be careful with wetting the paper. When he says slightly, he really means it. If you get the paper off one side while there's still paper on the other, you might get warping of the foam. If you don't need it to be completely flat, not an issue, but I've had the Elmer's warp because I got one side a little too wet, by gluing something to the paper. The Elmer's is very hard to pull the paper off of.
Let us know how things go for you.

We're all seeing this lately. Readi-Board has changed their formula, it seems.

You know, I didn't think about that Wyloch. I haven't bought any new foamcore stock in a while, so I've still got the easy peal stuff!

I purchased 3 sheets about 2-1/2 weeks ago. Haven't needed them for a project yet, so I hadn't checked the "peeling" fully. I just did that right now, and they peeled right off with no problem at all. And it's the same brand: ADAMS (R.L.Adams Plastics, Inc.). However, in the boxes at the Dollar store there were also some with white paper mixed in with the black. We didn't see the black at first, so white is what I pulled out first. I was a bit confused, wondering if it was the right thing (because the ones in the tutorial vids all had black paper), so I tested a corner of the paper, and it wouldn't really peel off (at least, not easily like in the vids). I only tried about a 1/4 inch, since I wasn't sure if I was going to buy it or not. And then my husband, who had started going through the other box after I told him "This doesn't look right", found a few with black paper. I tested just a tiny bit of the corner again, and it peeled back much more easily. Balfore - I'm really sorry you're having trouble with yours. Do you maybe have the ones with white paper?

Yes, it's the white ones.. Maybe some stores have older stock, and we are in a transition of getting the new boards that don't peel. I'll take a picture of the labelow when I get home. **Also, I applied to join the Facebook group...could someone please add me, so I can post my projects :-)

Balfore - Oh, no. Well, at least that confirms that the ones with white paper are different. If you buy black next time, you should (hopefully) not have any problems. If you do buy some more (with the black), please let us know how it goes. I'm curious to see if the black is consistent with the easy peeling, or if there's some "bad" batches, or inconsistent production/quality. If you want to do a more thorough peel-test (rather than just a tiny bit on the corner), you could buy one, take it to your car, and try peeling a large area. If all goes well, then just go right back in and buy some more. Chances are, if that one works fine then the others should as well (hopefully from the same batch). Good luck!

I purchased some black styroboard from dollar tree the other day, peeled fine for me...this upgrade or change that they are making comes as a great disappointment to me. I use the stuff all the time, hope they don't change the black ones

I bought the white stuff from dollar tree a few weeks ago to make the Dragon Longboat from Black Magic Craft. The first piece I tried peeling it off, took me a half hour and took a bunch of chunks off.
For the rest, I cut out the shapes I needed, ran it all under very hot water in the sink for about 1-2 minutes to melt the glue. The paper peeled off the entire thing very easily. For a few parts it didn't, the paper rubbed off very easily. I put the remaining foam flat on the table and patted down with paper towel then let air dry. I didn't have any problems with warping and it worked fine.
Give this a try on a few sample pieces to make sure you have the same experience. Solved the whole problem for me.

I too was defeated by the foamboard menace. I tried to peel a board today and it ended up with a lot of "extra texture."
I tried running pre cut pieces under hot water and it worked great for me too. No warping when done and the water doesn't get hot enough to cause melting.
Also used the spray bottle method on a full board with much success. On a second board, I turned the spray bottle up to 11 for testing purposes. There was pretty bad warping during the process, but it straightened up just fine after both sides were done.

I use a heat gun just long enough to melt the glue.

Has anyone figured out a way to stop the edges or entire foam board from curving? I recently tried some of these techniques, but it seems that every sheet has the same effect...large or small cuts. I've left one side with paper and the other paperless in the hopes it would give some rigidity, no luck.

I'm into plastic modeling, though years ago I used to DM D&D games. On Youtube, an RC airplane builder says he uses rubbing alcohol or that isopoprol alcohol (91%?). It's put into a spray bottle (dollar tree) as is, sprays the entire board and after a bit, paper peels right off. I'm looking at making scale 1/35th buildings using foam board which is why I went to Youtube for advice/info.

I have seen your stuff here and it is impressive!!! Not to mention I have played in many of those games of yours.....
